The only thing odd was the placement. If they were gonna jump out of the time line to wrap up that loose end it feels like it would have been best served earlier in the season.
It did seem like it would have fit as perhaps even a season opener. But this writing team has a track record 12 seasons long (BB+BCS) and have never badly stumbled. I suspect this episode will look much different 3 weeks from now. There has to be a reason they placed it after the BCS timeline essentially ended.

It's our final setup episode. They're necessary. Gene had to find his confidence. Now he's got it. Things are about to get nuts quick.

I really don't see how they're wrap everything up with only 3 episodes left.

Breaking Bad season 3. It's now more well-received for those who streamed it but watching it live was like taking the breath out of the show. Everything was really starting to take shape and then they drop 'Fly'.
It just felt like a wasted week and I have a similar feeling tonight.
I will say that the episodes following Fly were fantastic and the show never lets up after that episode. The difference now is that there are likely only 3 episodes left in this universe and we just spent an hour watching people shoplift.
Episode wasn't bad or boring, but I feel like it really didn't belong

It should also be mentioned that letting the mall get robbed because you were distracted by a Cinnabon is the most Jerry Gergich thing ever.

Couple thoughts:
I think Gene ends up getting arrested to end the show.
Something about not being able to really walk away from "the game" is going to be his downfall. It may be small. It may be big.
But I think it parallel's Walter's ending in BB. Him in cuffs, but on the ground, finally realizing what Chuck thought about him came true.
Also, that guy falling during the heist. True "Slipping Jimmy" reference. Almost undone by a slip and fall.

It was no accident that a slip was what almost did “Slippin’ Jimmy” in.

Maybe weekly television releases just aren't for you because that was a masterpiece but maybe I'm one of the ones that doesn't think the show is only good if Saul murders Jeff in cold blood or something.

This episode was a page out of the X-Files playbook. The odd standalone episodes age very well. The series will end just fine.

Agreed. They even hit us over the head with a hammer showing us Jimmy hasn't changed and can't turn it off.
But he left Saul behind.
This episode is likely setting up his demise.
I hated that they used such well recognized actors in this. It seemed out of place.
For the next 3 Monday nights, I'm watching with cinnamon rolls.

But each one of those could have been a series finale

I think this episode will age well by the time it's over. We just want fireworks at all times.
These folks know what they're doing.

Watching this show is kind of like walking my dog. We'll get up to a good pace, start jogging, and just when I think we're going to run the rest of the way home, he slams on the breaks and stops on a dime to sniff something out in a neighbor's yard.

Kim makes her return in the final episode as his legal representation??

Mike claimed Kim's "in the game".
The synopsis for this episode is "a new player enters the game". I think we know who that is.
yes. I also definitely knew that it was going to be the taxi driver, Jeff.

What's there to wrap up? Gene just took care of the only loose end that we know about. At this point it's simply inventing an interesting end to Jimmy's story.
With Kim's abrupt exit last time we saw her, everyone agrees she must be returning to be part of the end of the story. And if Walt and Jesse return and are indeed not merely cameo filler, then we're headed back to the BB timeline and what we learn there must have some bearing on Gene's end story. So yeah we're expecting a lot, but it's all speculation. I have faith that the story will be good and won't feel rushed.

Another problem I had with this episode is the replacement actor just wasn't very good
