Sorry but I totally disagree - the Rey / Kylo scenes alone are much better than anything in AotC (I haven't watched it while actually paying attention in forever but can't think of any major redeeming qualities), particularly the scene in Snoke's throne room, as well as them delving more into the nature of the force and the universe.

The fact that that scene is in the movie makes it even worse IMO because they had gold to work with, but dumped a whole pile of shite over it. AotC had nothing going for it on the other hand.

I swear to God Rose better be killed in the first 5 fricking minutes of Episode IX, or just ignore her entirely. 10 seconds of screen time where Kylo Ren cuts her in half is the most I want.

Think about this. Rian killed off Luke, Snoke and Captain Phasma. All bad arse characters and gave us Rose in return. "Here ya go JJ. Work with that!"

Pretty sure a massive object (like a dreadnaught) would actually have it's own gravity in space.

Just because something is big doesn’t mean it creates a gravity field, you know that right

Rose- she giggles and can't even speak when she meets Finn, despite their being in battle and apparently in trouble. She then serves as the voice that tells us that all the rich and wealthy capitalists are scum. The movie shows us this, and emphasizes it; see? Rich. Therefore, scum. Awful. Can't be any redeeming quality here.
And then she proceeds to stop Finn from having an impactful death that would legitimize his role, which has been under fire since the last movie. At least he sacrificed himself at the end... no, wait, he isn't allowed to do that either. The heroic act he attempts (any heroic action a male attempts in this film) is condemned, and then lectured against onscreen. Poe does something cool- bad. Finn does something heroic- no, that is wrong.

Everything you just mentioned x10.

Rose going from a star struck, unable to speak or do anything background character to suddenly being able to tazer Finn? And then becomes some sort of "hero" that actually has the balls to go off and search for the master code breaker? And escape prison? Come on now. It was just all a stretch for me, rose should have never had more screen time than the stupid shy act in this first place.

Next, as you said Poe literally was unable to do anything due to it being "wrong" according to the women in charge.

If you want to start nitpicking, the film has underlying tones of
males = bad, and stupid for wanting to be a hero
females = good, and smart for wanting to "not take a risk"

Just pisses me off, and I had a lot of issues with shite in the film.

I agree with everything you said bro

I guarantee that Abrams left him notes to work with and did basically the opposite of everything he wrote. Like that crystal cavern? Am I supposed to believe they designed the crystal cave just for 30 seconds of the Millennium Falcon to fly through (stupidly mind you). That had to have originally been thought of to be the final showdown between Rey and Kylo Ren, but Johnson said "frick having the main character have anything to do with the finale and actually have any struggle or change."

That just makes it so much worse.

Technically everything has a gravity field, but like something as small as the dreadnaught wouldn't create enough for them to be attracted from that far apart.

In addition, Luke's story arch and character development within this single movie and the unique theme / tone of failure and desperation also makes it much better than AotC - again to my eyes at least.

Look I’m not here to defend AotC, it was a sh*t movie but it still had a higher audience score than this one. It was a fun movie with action and tons of lightsaber battles and shite you equate with Star Wars though, so it had that going for it. The action in TLJ was ok but lacking and even the serious monotone moments were interrupted with slapstick comedy. It was as if Jar Jar binks was a ghostwriter on this movie.

If they would have simply avoided this, it would be so much better.

Honestly, and maybe it hurts that now there are only like 10 members of the Resistance left, but if I was Leia, Rose would be facing a firing squad. I mean she was instructed to guard the escape pods for the plan, but betrays the orders and takes a Pod. Then she gets hundreds of people killed through disobeying this order. Finally she damns everyone to almost certain death when she prevents Finn from doing a selfless sacrifice to save everyone. Finn at least gets a reprieve that he was willing to lay down his own life to save everyone, and Poe is useful as an amazing pilot. But Rose? fricking useless. Every army and country would kill her or give her a life sentence for the shite she did.

And when did she become a badass pilot and gets to take one of the speeders at the end?

Did I miss something? She said she worked behind pipes all day or something, didn’t she?

She is preaching Maoism in this movie as morally righteous. Not socialism, but a step beyond that to take down the bourgeoisie. You gamble on horses, well you're the problem having disposable income that we need to take from you.

Why do Rey's parents have to be someone? The nobody with unknown parents who turn out to be the king or some other super important is the most standard archetype there is

Because Ren's parents and grandparents are the most powerful force users in the history of the universe and she beats the shite out of him routinely with absolutely no training at all.

Had they not made Ren a Skywalker set a generation after Luke then Rey wouldn't need an explanation, The Force Awakens should've taken place 200 years after Return of the Jedi with the Skywalkers all dead and the Jedi and the Sith relegated to legends and myths and then he force awakens again.

I blame George Lucas for this and Rian trying to correct the Midiclorian thing. I do like that Rey's parents being a bunch of drunks. It goes back to Ratatouille's catchphrase "Anyone Can Cook" which means "Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere". For that reason, I like it. It's the only change that Rian did from what JJ intended that I enjoy.
