Just finished it. Scary stuff.

The walls of the sub were "banging" and "popping" as it ascended and descended. ...on a regular basis...and he kept going.

He was in the sub on a test run and HEARD the snapping of the carbon fibers, was visibly concerned, yet came back up and celebrated like everything was fine! That's psychopathic AF.

But the biggest jaw drop for me was they just kept the sub out in the elements to freeze. I mean, you don't have to have an engineering degree to figure out water freezing would be super not good on a carbon fiber hull. If nothing else, look at what happened to the Challenger shuttle.

The most over and improperly used adjective in America in the last 5 years.

Followed closely by the word ‘insane’.

It seems two different documentaries are being discussed. The OP is referring to the newly released on Netflix.

Even while "Celebrating" he had the look of a man who had narrowly escaped death. Not a very excited demeanor at all. The fact they were so close to 4000m and came up before they hit that number tells all you need to know about his faith in that hull during that dive.

it’s wild that billionaires agreed to get into this absolutely janky looking sup.

People with the money to finance real deep see trips

I get why OceanGate wanted to make a cheap sub, I don’t understand why a billionaire would pay so much money to get into one.

They had one of the world’s most renown deep sea divers on the expedition and a shite ton of false propaganda about the testing of the vessel. They never actually tested the second hull.

It was all a big lie that was sold

Me and you came away from this having two very different opinions of Rush.

The guy was literally so cocky/not humble that it killed him and 4 others

Make sure to watch the Discovery Channel documentary on this also. Its on HBO Max. It offers different info from the Netflix doc. Not contradicting what Netflix did, but rounding out the story.

that’s a good point PH seemed pretty checked out

telling people “i’ve had a good life” when they bring up safety concerns isn’t not great

Personally liked the HBO one a little better but the Netflix one wasn't bad.

Almost like he was at peace going out that way at the bottom of the ocean.

I read while making the replacement hull that ended up imploding they went with a new 3 part process. Instead of wrapping with all the required carbon all at once and then curing it they wrapped with around 1/3 of total carbon and then cured and then repeated that 2 additional times. Seems like with popping and compression pockets could have developed easier doing it this way than doing it all together, but it also went down further multiple times than it should have and further than the ones doing it all together in testing or the original Titan. Would have been interesting to compare the two if only he had stopped using the 2nd one sooner.

Then he rushed it out for use instead of doing more testing on the new process. They also reused the titanium from the older model including the titanium parts that had been epoxied to openings of the old carbon hull for the titanium ends to connect to. Supposedly the view window wasn’t certified to go down to the levels he was going, and he refused another one that was certified for those levels.

I don’t currently have Netflix as I rotate stuff, but is there a website that shares the most up to date and accurate information on Titan, Oceangate, and the implosion that these documentaries have been touching on?

Can't imagine the terror of hearing those loud pops and snaps of the carbon fiber while inside. Now we know what they were hearing before the implosion.

They developed a sound monitoring system to detect hull anomalies then completely ignored it

He was far from humble, he was narcissistic and foolishly proud. That and financial pressures caused him to ignore all the warnings and press on.
