I’m pretty sure that he was handpicked by JK. So she kind of had the final say back then.

Handpicked or not, it was a brilliant casting decision by the producers. Thirteen-year-old me, having been a big fan of films such as Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, thought it was a home run casting choice when it was made official back in 2000.

I had no problem with the age difference. I was just noting that in the books the characters of Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew were far younger than their on-screen counterparts.

As you can see by this very thread, racism is alive and well.

Are you inferring that people who want characters to stay as they are written are racist?

Good lord. What a leap.

But Alan Rickman wasn't Snape as written, he was 20+ years older. Noone (including me) has any problem with that.

It's only when they change the skin color people get all outraged.

No, I think some people have an issue with this because of racism, those people probably don’t give a shite about Harry Potter. I think some people have an issue with this for a variety of other reasons that don’t involve racism. I have an issue with this casting myself. I would be calling myself a racist if I labeled everyone in this thread a racist for having issue with it.

Lots of people here with various opinions and motives.

1. Black culture is bad and they can only get wins from white people.
2. Whitewash it with the "better blacks" in prominent normal roles that were inherently white. While also choosing to ignore that casting a black hero instead of white villain for this topic would be better.
3. Ask why can't black people create their own characters and content. Very clearly insinuating that they can't

You are way,,WAY off, I mean off the planet!

You remind me of a joke where a judge asked the divorcing couple "" Do you have any grounds for divorce?"
The husband said " Yes sir, we have a couple'a acres."

I'm glad some of the others know what I mean.

I see you've avoided the Gadpt or Ledger comparisons
Because you don't have a real argument here.

You're trying to take this stance that all changes are equal
..and they just aren't. We are talking about concepts of characters that usually invoke something more than "oh he's white," or "oh wonder woman is buff and should never not be buff."

You understand it's more complicated than simply "a change," and has more to do with the complete picture and emotion behind an original character that is given life in a way.

Im sitting here defending, but you should offer up a good reason why the the truth of a character, who they, how they look, what emotion they should invoke based on the complete picture of a character, should be allowed to change. That'd the core issue, why should he be changed?

And don't dodge by saying he shouldn't, you are fine with this because you think he should change.

And the star trek thread makes me think of a good comparison...

What real artists did when they wanted a black trek captain. Instead of making changing the race of Kirk or Picard... what did they do?

They created an equally badass, and maybe more badass, captain is Sisko. Why is that so hard? Why not create a new character that has his own story, that is equally as interesting as Snape?

he was already changed. from a 31 year old to a 50+ year old.

now he is changing from a pale guy to a dark guy. neither change means the character becomes something different. They mean he looks different

because they wanna follow the books story more closely than the movies did and have 1 season for each book now instead of 2 hours.

creating an entirely new badass villain would accomplish the opposite of sticking more closely to the books than the movies.

Is this the guy from Gangs of London?

He's a fine actor, but I don't get the casting. It will just cause people to lash out at him.

HBO used to be better than this. All they had to do was cast a white Snape and they couldn't do it. More than half of HP fans would even accept a black Hermione and they went and did this for, what is apparently, no reason at all but to "own the racists" or some shite. If they wanted a black main character, make a new series based on HP because literally no one wanted the original books remade in the first place. It's just so damn stupid
