The birthday party looked fun as hell.
Anybody else get anxiety and second hand embarrassment from films like this?
Spot on with the ripley comparison.

Barry was top notch in banshees and he smashed this one too, I think .

The sister was smoking hot.
This film was a hilarious and dark roller coaster of emotions. I’m still in shock but I think I throughly enjoyed it.

Barry Keoghan is underrated. He can act his arse off. He also has that duplicitous, creepy bit down tight, between this one and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

I enjoyed this one, even with the wtf moments.

I watched this movie tonight and I think that you are exactly wrong.

The movie is 100% an indictment on the wealthy. The Catton family is deeply flawed and simply “elite” through their birth. Oliver uses treachery, deceit, manipulation and murder to eventually gain control of their estate….but in the end, he is truly no different than the ancestors of the Catton family who used the same tactics over generations to achieve the same goal.

It would have been a better ending if Farleigh or the butler had showed up at the end and strangled him.

Yes the trailer is totally misleading.
This thing is just a redone Talented Mr. Ripley with a gayer weirder protagonist.
I'm sure because it is gay and weird it will win every Oscar

Yeah and when 200 people sang Happy Birthday even though you could see it coming when they got to "happy birthday dear..." and no one said/knew his name that was so cringe

Question about this movie-- I just watched it last night:

Was Oliver's plan to get to Saltburn and Felix was the way in and he just got obsessed along the way?

Or was Oliver's plan to get to Felix and his Saltburn obsession developed along the way?

You can go either way with it. I don’t think it was a foregone conclusion they’d all end dead

The former, I believe. He was playing a pretty long game and his affection for Felix surprised him, I think.

Probably so. Maybe even his old math pal that he turned his back on.

The other thing I will say is that the time jump sorta kills the idea of him having a grand plan to take over the Estate. I mean, was he really playing the 14 year long con? or had he moved on with his life at all?

Overall, I didn’t think the movie was that great. The several talked about gross out scenes were there to add shock value to the character I guess, but seemed like over kill.

I don't think there's any way Oliver could've known, at least in the beginning, that Felix would invite him to Saltburn. I'm not even sure if he planned to murder them from the beginning or if he decided to do that after seeing how easily Felix and his family could be manipulated. I kept hoping that the butler would stop him. Once Felix caught on to him, Oliver had no choice but to kill him.

Wife started watching it last night and I was playing on the tablet so watched it by default.

Very well done. Interesting. Part of it was figuring out where it was going.
The lewd shite was oddly not as offensive as I though except maybe one thing. Just unnecessary really. Could be deleted without harming anything.
Also thought it was gonna be all gay centric but it wasn’t as bad as many GOT episodes. Or maybe equally.

Still, good well acted and interesting movie, not a good prime time movie IMO, but a top off-night watch.

I haven’t read past this in the thread but I loved the ending, I’m writing this as the credits scroll in fact. I really liked it overall even with the multiple cringe inducing scenes.

I liked it too.

Also. I must be a degenerate because everyone had me spooked it was going to be “soooooo fricked up”. It was completely fine. Lol. I mean, I don’t have a habit of sucking off bathtub drains or getting off at gravesites, but hardly found it disturbing to watch in any kind of significant way. A bit over the top is all.

Yes. A character jerks off in a bathtub and afterwards someone jumps into the bathtub and starts slurping up the bath water. There’s a weird gay handjob sexual assault scene/extortion. There’s a scene where a man takes off all his clothes and starts fricking a freshly dug grave. Nothing super graphic, but really weird and makes you want to take a shower

Yeah. I’m good.

ETA apparently so are quite a few others.

I absolutely despise twist endings like this that say "oh yeah, here's all these things that happened offscreen". The Prestige, for example, is so effective because it didn't really conceal anything

Anyway, I don't think this movie knew what it wanted to be. I'm okay with the twist, but the way it was done just feels inconsistent with the rest of the film.
