It was enjoyable if you don't try to compare it to LOTR in any way.

They tried to do too much with too little. But still a fan.

I enjoyed them, but thought they were pretty stupid a lot of times. And at times it definitely felt like they were trying to drag two movies into three, and it lacked because of that.

Spot on.

I enjoyed it, but it certainly isn't perfect. Most of my thoughts on the flaws are covered in other posts. Including the studio getting greedy and turning it into 3 movies. Peter Jackson was sort of forced into the director role last minute with too short of a timeline to complete it. I think it would've been much better had that not been the case.

However, the Gollum scene and Smaug were absolutely incredible. They pretty much saved the movies.

While no doubt the movies were stretched out too far (and some scenes completely pointless), all these people downing the increase in comedy and physics defying action need to consider the audience the book was originally written for: children.

I myself read the book in sixth grade, and while it's not extremely true to the written word I can promise you that sixth grade me would have loved those movies.

In the same vein, LotR was written for a more mature audience, and thus the movies match that expectation. And by even further extension the Silmarrilion was an even more difficult work, bordering on a history book reading rather than a story.

People need to get off of their high horses about movies sometimes. It was an enjoyable trilogy, even with its imperfections.

I thought it was fun, despite its flaws. I'd watch almost anything set in Middle Earth.

Agree. I can't wait until Christopher Tolkien dies so we can get a Middle Earth extended universe.

I didn't see any of 'em until the extended editions all came out on BluRay. By that time, my expectations were totally in check, so I enjoyed 'em well enough.

The Pale Orc subplot is vastly trimmed down. Azog is obviously still leading the attack on the Lonely Mountain at the end, but he does not appear in the film until after the company escapes the goblin tunnels (suggesting that the slaying of the Great Goblin is a factor in their vendetta, as it was in the novel).

AZOG was dead in the book. They could have done it correctly with his son Bolg leading the goblin army for revenge as it was in the book.

They lost me at the mine car roller coaster scene in the Goblin King's tunnel. I lost interest and I don't think I've ever watched the 2nd or 3rd movies straight through - though I will catch bits of them if they are on as I flip through channels.

Utterly boring, and I dislike very few movies.

Sure, but I don't remember if Bolg was in the movie. this guy did a great job editing just for the heck of it.

Ok. I don't know if he considered making that change or not, or if it would have been possible with the given footage. Good idea though.

I also couldn't stand the fan service they tried to pull with putting Legolas in the movie.

I think I would have still given him a cameo, since he would have been present for some of the Hobbit in the book as well, just not mentioned.

I'd have to go back and watch it, but there may have been a way. Bolg led the forces from Gundabad to the final battle in the movie.
