Really? They were much faster-paced than the original LOTR trilogy, which I imagine you must truly loathe.

Nowhere near as good as LOTR, but everyone knows that. I thought they had some great scenes and characters, but also some terrible ones. I think The Desolation of Smaug would easily be my favorite of the three.

Absolutely. tDoS was very good. The Battle of Five Armies was great fun as well—much more entertaining than a 2 hour fight scene should have been IMO

Liked those a lot. If there was an edit where we never see a LOT less of Frodo and Sam, it would be one of my favorites. I rewatch II and III often.

I didn't really care for them. The 2nd was just awful IMHO, so slow......the only plus is that they do mention old toby in the 2nd one, which was kinda cool.

the book is relatively short, it didn't need to be three movies. Might check out the edited version to see if its better.

The parts that Jackson had to get right and had time to shoot properly were great. You can tell which scenes he didn't have time for and we're rushed and the movies suffered for it.

Its a mess. They hired Guillermo del Toro to do it and he put in a lot of work before bowing out due to MGM's financial problems. I think he would have done a better job and been truer to the book. MGM then turned to Jackson who had to rush everything since they didn't want to push the schedule back. Jackson completely scrapped del Toro's vision because it didn't fit his own.

A lot of great scenes, but terrible movies ruined by:
1. Bloat (could have easily been two movies)
2. Egregious use of CGI when makeup and costumes were used in the original.
3. Laughable physics is all 3 movies.

The movies just aren't good movies.

I enjoy watching The Hobbit trilogy. Hell of a lot better than the original novel.

It's an excuse to jump back into that beautifully crafted world. Are they as good as Lord of the Rings? No. is the material stretched a bit too thin across three films? Yes. It's nowhere near as bad as what most people consider the Star Wars prequels. These are extremely watchable films.

To be fair to Jackson on this one, he said he had 3 years to make all the masks and props for Lord of the Rings. He had about a year here, so he didn't have near the time to make them as authentic as LotR was.

Since we're already 3 pages in I'll just say this. The scenes that mostly stuck to the material were great. (Meeting at Bilbo's house, Bilbo's scene with Smaug, etc.) The areas where they diverted weren't so great.

eta: Bilbo, Smaug, and Thorin were all well cast.

By the way, can anyone tell me why the Dwarf theme in the first film wasn't used in the other two films? It was a great theme and I was sad to see it go.

I didn't like them. Loved LOTR.

Some folks defending The Hobbit love to claim the tone was different in the book so all the childish BS was warranted. I roll my eyes to this about as much as the orc heads rolling around in The Hobbit. The level of violence sort of kills the light hearted tone argument.

The 1000 foot fall with nobody getting hurt.

The love garbage was just that. Garbage. Oh look an imprisoned dwarf. I must instantly fall in love. more eye rolling.

I've seen LOTR EE numerous times. Best movie experience I ever had was the release of Return of the King with the EE editions of Fellowship and Two Towers.

I couldn't even muster the energy to watch the 3rd hobbit movie.

Money grab garbage. They could have been better. They weren't. Don't even get me started on shite stained cross eyed Radagast.

It's not just that it was too long, but so many times you felt like it was being redundantly stretched out. How long to we need to see the dragon talking shite to Bilbo and chasing him around? That one scene may have only been +5 minutes but it felt like much longer and there were so many like that as well.

one movie too many. Only needed two.

CGI ruined it all. I think this trilogy really influenced Abrams to limit the use of CGI in The Force Awakens.
