First 3-4 seasons are all time great.
The next couple are still quite good but maybe not as good.
The last few it begins nose diving and the final season is an embarrassment considering what came before.

LOST says hold my beer. I probably still have the map somewhere.
I didn’t catch LOST live as I was in middle school/high school at the time and wasn’t watching much tv. But, we did binge the shite out of it in college as it was one of the first series streamed by Netflix. Lots of bong bowls and classes skipped because of that show

The ending is a bit rushed but not remotely as bad as people make it out to be. Still a top 5 series all time for me.

You might want to write down who people are for a while, how they're related and where they're located because it's a lot to remember.

I binged it about 6 years ago.
I think the ending is worse on those who had to wait for 1 episode a week or had to wait for offseasons to pick up later.
If you are doing a straight run through, there is obvious drop off in later seasons. But I never got angry at the show or the writers. That's a pretty retarded thing to do. It's just a show.
You and I miss the water cooler talk. But I honestly think our binge viewing is much more enjoyable for the show as a whole.

I just want to hear your thoughts and opinions on how good you think it is, how bad the ending was, etc. Or anything else I should expect watching it.
My advice on GoT:
First and foremost, use subtitles.
Pay attention to it. Don't be on your phone of fricking around. There is a LOT of shite going on and tons of different characters, and it is difficult to follow if you aren't paying attention.
At its peak, it is GOAT-level television. Yes, the last 1.5 seasons or so are hit or miss quality-wise, but there are still some excellent scenes and things that happen even in the last season. People hate how it ended in terms of who ends up on the throne, and that is very valid. But outside of that and a few other things that were either rushed or sort of stupid, most plots/storylines wrap up fairly nicely. And there are just some absolutely badass scenes and episodes in the latter half of the series. So ignore the people who claim it's the "worst ending to a show ever!!" and all that shite. It's disappointing, sure. Even bad at times. But there is still lots of other shite that makes up for it. I think a lot of people just got too attached to it, so they were more crushed about how certain things ended up. I've found that binging makes it far easier to consume, and makes the errors in the show much easier to take as well.
If you are trying to avoid spoilers, I'd find a decent site that will allow you to look things up without being bombarded with spoilers. But I remember when I caught up on the first couple of seasons before I watched as it aired, I had to look up things sometimes like how certain characters were related or shite like that.
I'd request that you keep bumping this thread with your thoughts as you go along, just to let us know what you're thinking. But f you decide to do that, be careful reading responses...some people around here simply cannot help themselves when it comes to spoiling shite for others (and GoT exemplified that big time when it aired).
Enjoy the ride. It really is great TV, and despite the quality dropping in the last season or two, it's still very good. And after rewatching some episodes here and there, I don't think it's as bad as most people seem to bitch about it being. At least that's the case for me. Also, full disclosure, I wasn't a book reader, so none of the differences between those and the show bothered me at all.

I started my first watch a few weeks ago, I’m up to season 3 ep 2.
It’s good, we’re enjoying it. I do find it a little tough to keep up with EVERYTHING going on. All these fricking names that pop up, some of the people look the same and I get lost. After some episodes I have to google wtf actually went down just to keep pace with watching

Any character (even side chracters) that have more than a few lines will most likely resurface later in the show. Try to remember the characters.
Like one poster said you need to pay attention to everything and this isnt a "be on your phone" show.
Enjoy the ride. I am on season 5 of a rewatch and Season 4 may be my favorite season.

Did a rewatch last year. Enjoyed every minute up until the last 2 episodes. Like everyone has said the first 4 seasons are GOAT TV. Seasons 5-7 are still really good and have some absolutely all time episodes. The beginning of season 8 is ok it just ends very unsatisfying. And pay attention or you’ll be like me and call one character Thanos of Mir for 2 seasons

I can reiterate what everyone else said. I loved the show until the last season.
But what I loved the most about it was the community. After every episode aired, you could jump on Facebook and everyone was talking about it. It was a simpler time. I really miss that. Not too many other shows had that except for early Walking Dead and maybe Breaking Bad

One of my favorite things about discussing the show in the Hodor thread was the nicknames we would give characters to keep them straight in our head if we couldn’t quite remember the actual name. Long live The Red Titty Witch.

The only one I can think of that was equal or greater than GoT as far as community interaction and discussion was LOST.

First 5 seasons are great. Pretty much downhill from there. Show runners were lost without the actual book material despite supposedly being told the end game. Lazy writing and story lines plagued seasons 6 through 8.

What he said ^^^
I got into WAY late. People kept telling ho great it was but, it just didn't interest me for a long time. By the time I started watching, people were already bitching about the second to last season.
I really had no idea what it was about and had zero expectations.
I binged it non-stop to get caught up before the last season started.
I've watched it beginning to end 4 times. I don't have the problems a lot of others have with it. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to be mad about it. Or, maybe I just don't care.
Either way, it's a great show and absolutley worth a watch. Or 2 or 4.

I have to disagree here. I hated who ended up on the thrown but could actually live with that if they got there in a better way. And it was rushed yes but I could also live with that. But I think very few storylines/plot points/character arcs actually end up nicely.
Obviously going to avoid spoilers but ruining so many character arcs and making so many story lines and prophecy built up over 8 seasons completely useless was the worst part of it for me. I'd have to think about it more but off the top of my head I can only thing ok one character that had a very good/legit ending. Most were very disappointing and some even quite comical.
I said earlier that the show started coming off the rails in season 6. There was a specific moment in particular and I made a thread about it but I didn't feel that way until my rewatch. While the show was airing I defended it longer than 90% of the people on here. Hell I still love The Battle of Winterfell (not factoring in bad battle plans) despite the majority hating it. It wasn't until the final two episodes that I wanted to actually riot.

LINK
OP, this is a link to the interactive map of Westeros and Essos. It is invaluable.
shite, you may want to study closely before you even start watching the series.
Something else you may notice on your second rewatch, LOL, one of the amazing things about the writing is that certain conversations in the first two or three seasons, somehow seem to have meaning in the last two or three seasons. So he the prior posters warning to pay attention.

And the meme's!
Now you will understand meme's that have been circulating for years.
Also, you're fortunate now that the House of the Dragon is out. So you can go straight into that after GOT.
