I love that they took the Settlers of Catan concept and pushed it so far in to the absurd. The level of overly complex, non-sensical minutia on such a grand scale is just the type of stuff that super nerds love.

It's like that line from Beatlejuice where the nerdy dad says "this thing reads like stereo instructions" and he sees that as a GOOD thing!

As a long time D&D player, I secretly want someone to actually invent Cones of Dunshire.

Jamm was awful- the very thing that people complain about with Andy and The Office. When he was featured, the show suffered for it.

With characters like this, small doses are the key.

My favorite sitcom of all time… I think. I have very few grumbles about the show in general.

Agreed. Parks n Rec and Seinfeld are my two greatest of all time.

The scene where he is hungover after drinking the Snake Juice is maybe one of the funniest moments in television.

This scene, and when Ron reviews the contents of Andy's tool box are my favorite bits of the show. The bit where Andy describes all the medical procedures he has done after getting insurance is also pretty good.

Also reminded of Dr Sapperstein.

Nicest guy on the show… till it came to Tom.

First season they tried to hard to make Leslie a female Michael Scott and they underutilized Ron.

First season was brutal. Leslie Knope is easily one of the most frustrating characters in TV history. That show caught lightning in a bottle when it realized making the entire show only about her was a bad idea. Instead they gave us small portions of her awful cringe, and gave us memorable characters to look forward to.

Ron Swanson is one of the best sitcom characters of all time. He's a very close 2nd to me behind George Costanza.

we’re far enough in the thread i’ll just talk about it

but when Andy hops up, just says no and then heaves all over Kyle’s shoes is one of the best gags in a sitcom in a while.

Watching him kiss a dude on The Last of Us was...odd. I kept seeing Ron.

While it has some good moments, the first season is pretty rough.

It gets much better from there as they find their footing. In their own, highly misanthropic way, the Ron and April relationship is one of the most wholesome and loving "father/daughter" bonds you'll find on a sitcom.

Yep. Too bad Nick Offerman is as far from Ron Swanson as can be. I suspect the idea was to make fun of libertarians, but Ron was correct about most things.

The Banquet episode where everyone thought Nope and the nurse were gay was hilarious.

Some of my favorites from Ron that appear in rotation in my conversations:

quote:

“Just give me all the bacon and eggs you have. Wait … I worry what you heard was, ‘Give me a lot of bacon and eggs.’ What I said was, give me all the bacon and eggs you have. Do you understand?”

quote:

“I’m a simple man. I like pretty, dark-haired women and breakfast food.”

quote:

“Clear alcohols are for rich women on diets.”

quote:

“You’ve accidentally given me the food that my food eats.”

quote:

“When people get too chummy with me, I like to call them by the wrong name to let them know I don’t really care about them.”

quote:

[On bowling]” Straight down the middle. No hook, no spin, no fuss. Anything more and this becomes figure skating.”

quote:

“Any dog under fifty pounds is a cat and cats are useless.”

quote:

“Never half-arse two things. Whole-arse one thing.”

quote:

“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Don’t teach a man to fish…and feed yourself. He’s a grown man. And fishing’s not that hard.”

I have no clue how any writer would have thought he was a good character in any way. I would have a hard time trying to think of a worse character in any shows I've liked

Fred Armisen rattling off random stuff that sends you to jail in Venezuela never gets old

Wish they would have let him go a little bit more
