No Country is a tale of the randomness and inequity of certain evil. The characters are merely tools to ultimately portray that unconquerable evil. TWBB instead is purely a character study showing the rise, fall and eventual implosion of the fictional Daniel Plainview. Both great movies but not really comparable in terms of genre IMO.

TWBB is boring and slow. Hard to watch for me at least

NCFOM is in my top 5

If both were on right now and I had to choose to rewatch one it would be Blood.

Both fantastic, and that's not to kiss DDL's a$$-they're just both great movies. Country has virtually no music and sparse dialogoue but the foley is remarkable (check the sound of boots & gravel). Blood has the stark, weird Johnny Greenwood score that just wins, and might be what is swaying me.

No Country for me. Just a compelling intense movie. Went to see it by myself in theaters and remember there was no music in it. It was awesome.

It's funny how linked these movies are. No Country's the much more rewathchable, Blood, while beautiful is self indulgent and slowly paced. I was down with No Country winning the Oscar. Chigurgh is one of my favorite performances ever, walked out saying "he was amazing."

Eta: ftr...as much as I see greatness in each movie, they're the new classics....I hated both endings.

I also thought it was time for the cohens to win the Oscar for best picture. But regardless it was the best movie that year.

I remember saying that the first time I saw it too, just noticed at some point, and went "hunh, practically no soundtrack to this movie."

Who else spent NCFOM second guessing Lewelyn and figuring out who to get away with it?

Sheriff Ed Tom Bell was the best actor in the movie.

A little did you know....

Both films were shot in Marfa, TX in summer of 2006. I heard Cohen say that in one of the scenes where Josh Brolin is looking off in the distance you can see a light gray smoke. That was from the set of TWBB.

Here we go again.

Why are these two always compared besides being up for best picture?

The board has argued this ad nauseum. I think the conclusions always are better acting goes to TWBB, but better movie goes to NCfOM.

weird comparison

No Country is one of the masterpieces of my lifetime, IMO

TWBB is not, but the DDL performance is one of the most disturbing I have ever seen. He is mindblowingly great.
