It had so much potential but completely fell flat and was really unsatisfying by the end. The scary parts were legitimately scary, but there was just no story at all and you can barely understand wha the characters are saying with the olde English.

I thought the little kids communing with the devil through a goat was a joke, but no, these annoying dumb kids are actually talking to the devil through a black goat named Black Phillip. What?

The mother was completely hysterical throughout the entire movie, and most of it is just incoherent screaming. The only emotion in the movie other than a few jump scares was feeling sorry for the father because his whole family sucks.

The end was ridiculous, I was sitting on the couch watching by myself and started to boo when the credits rolled. I've never done that in my life.

Anyone else seen this? Don't let the reviews on IMDB fool you, they must have done some astroturfing to get anyone to rate this 10/10.

The movie is awesome. As for the goat being the devil, the movie is based upon puritan fears.
One was that the devil could take the shape of a person or animal and corrupt people.

If you read Hawthorne or watched The Crucible by Miller the movie is palpable.

It's one of those movies where you really have to put yourself in the mindframe of the protagonists and their period to get the most out of it.

I would have found the movie much more interesting if their fears had been unfounded. But no, their pet goat actually was the devil. That's just silly.

There's a concept to it. You wanted a more contemporary mainstream horror movie. It isn't that, and it isn't trying to be that. It tries to imitate the type of story that early colonials would have considered horror. That's the concept. It at least gets points for trying something interesting.

That would have completely missed the mark on the concept. It was a tribute to puritan fears, not a satire.

I enjoyed the movie, but i just have to say I really disagree with this line of thinking when it comes to films. A movie should not be given "points" just because it tries something new. Now of it tries something new and it works then I say give it extra credit, but to say a movie is better just for trying something new is absurd. That was my problem with raging bull. That movie was so hyped I was expecting a masterpiece and end up watching 2 hours of a terribly paced, little plot other than deniro being a piece of shite to women and his brother, black and white movie. Let's not reward something just for being different

I kind of agree with you. However, the cinematography in The Witch was fantastic.

I really enjoyed the Witch. It’s essentially the modern telling of a Puritan story or urban legend. Yeah, a person in the 21st century would say “Goats aren’t the devil”, but in the 17th and 18th century, danger, and seemingly evil, lurked around every corner and people projected their fears on animals and one another. Look at the Salem witch trials, people were put on trial and executed over some CRAZY claims that we know could never happen now but they threw an entire region into state of witch-fueld psychosis.

The fact that didn’t rely on big jump-scares or tons of CGI monsters/demons and just built up a ton of suspense that never really let go is what makes the film for me. The cinematography was top notch.

So you're saying that creativity has no value. Having the guts and ingenuity to try something new should always be applauded when it comes to art. It is so hard not to be derivative and boring that even breaking out of that is an accomplishment. I don't want to live in a world where artists are too scared to fail to try new ideas.

Also, keep in mind that you are saying that you can criticize a movie for having an idea that you think is uninteresting, but I can't credit a movie for doing something new that I think is interesting. When we're talking about the exact same feature and idea.

I agree with all of this. I'm glad the film makers decided not to take the modern-day cynical tack of it all being in their heads. A nice little fresh take on things by making all of their fears real.

I liked The Witch and think it’s a great movie. I don’t scare easy and this film is one of the only ones to ever make me uncomfortable.

Toward the end, after her family is dead and waste has been lain, when she is collapsing under the strain of everything that she has witnessed to the point that she just numbly walks in to the house, sits down and lays her head down on the dining table as darkness begins to fall...

The danger and dread was palpable to me.
