“The world will know my innocence,” so says Jodie Turner-Smith in the first full trailer for Anne Boleyn, the highly-anticipated series in which the Queen & Slim star is transformed into an actual queen.
The three-part Channel 5 series, first revealed by Deadline, will examine the downfall of Boleyn through the prism of a psychological thriller, in what is billed as a convention-busting biopic on the Tudor monarch.
The series seeks to tell Boleyn’s side of the story, with the trailer hinting at firey encounters with husband King Henry VIII (Mark Stanley) after her failure to provide him with a male heir.

I never knew Anne Boleyn was black

Yeah, and I just want to get this out of the way before people jump in here saying it's film/television, and therefore the race of the actors don't matter: it's a period drama. The point of a period drama is to transport you back to the time period and make you feel like you are a fly on the wall as some of the most important events in history transpired in front of you. A good period drama makes you feel like you were really there. When you cast black actors to play people we know from contemporary paintings and writings were white, it kind of takes the realism out of the equation and also takes you out of the experience. You're not watching history come alive anymore, you're watching a TV show.
And if it's okay to race-bend period dramas set in 16th century England, then everything else should be fair game. Instead of the actors wearing period clothing they might as well be wearing late-20th century garb. Instead of Anne Boleyn being executed by beheading they should show her being fried in the electric chair.

Henry VIII is Chinese.

Henry VIII was a non binary gender queer who killed Boleyn because she knew his secret

Well then she may as well be played by a 70 year old man in drag

Not interested in this.
Looking forward to their next series about Nelson Mandela starring Gary Oldman.

It's emersion breaking but if it's good enough writing it can be overcome. It just seems silly to set yourself up for failure in such a competitive industry though. Maybe they think that using different races will end up getting them lots of free marketing (like this thread) and be a net positive.

I think the trend of casting people of color to play real people who weren't POC is stupid.

Cultural appropriation.

In 100 years that world is going to think that every major human in the history of ever was black.
Also, I have never found Anne Boleyn to be very interesting.
This gives the producers a reason to complain when the show inevitably flops. "America isn't ready to look in the mirror and recognize their systemic racism. Our show was beautifully crafted and our diverse cast and crew are the heroes we need but not the ones we deserve."

I 100% disagree. It's a period drama for a reason. If I'm watching a TV series or movie that's supposed to take place in a time period far removed from the present day, I expect authenticity. Emersion is the #1 goal of a period drama because the filmmakers are attempting to transport you to another time to make you feel like you're really there. When you start casting black actors to play English nobility some one or two centuries before black people ever set foot in Britain, it defeats the #1 purpose of a period drama.
This is clearly a move to get people talking about a show pertaining to a subject matter that is all but played out. Why do we need another story about Anne Boleyn? It's been done expertly by filmmakers time and time again over the past 20-30 years. The Tudors and Wolf Hall both did the story and the woman justice. There is no need for another one so soon after those came and went. That's why they cast a black actress to play her. It's a greedy ploy for ratings and conversation.

Anne was the daughter of Thomas Boleyn, later Earl of Wiltshire and Earl of Ormond, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk.
Maybe she was adopted?
Well modern activists are claiming Beethoven was a Moor...so anything goes these days. Revisionist history is in vogue.

The casting accomplishes wokeness points in addition to bringing some sort of publicity to an otherwise played out story.
Which begs the question, why not just create a new story based on different historical people?

Split the difference, Beethoven was a Moop.

That or do a modern day adaptation of the story with this actress. But in a historical setting this makes no sense.

Imagine the uproar if they remade Roots and cast Daniel Radcliff as Kunta Kinte.
