The Rock may win some hardware for this one.

Man I feel like those early UFC fighters were truly some bad hombres. A level above what we have now in terms of savagery and toughness.

They were either bad MFers or they were retarded. In the early days, the rules and the fighting techniques were still being figured out. You'd get into the ring with almost zero info on how your oppenent fights and even if you did know, you almost certainly had no training on how best to combat their style. You just went in hoping your style would best their style.
In some ways it was a better product. It was style vs style as opposed to now where every fighter knows how to defend (at least somewhat) BJJ, Wrestling, Muy Thai, and Boxing. Obviously as far as being an actual sport with athletes competing at the highest level, its better now.
IDK if yall know much about Mark Kerr but his story is particularly interesting because he was a genuinely nice guy that happened to be good at smashing people. He got addicted to pain killers and alomost felt forced to hurt people against his will to make a living. There were better fighters (IMO) in the early days but alot of them were just crazy, mean SOBs that enjoyed hirting people.

I look at guys like Don Frye from back in the day though and think holy shite, that guy could legit kill someone in a few seconds.

I remember Dan Severn used to slap the $hit out of his opponents. He'd rarely throw a closed fist punch.

They would get fined for throwing closed fist punches at one point.
I’m not sure Keith Hackney got paid for the night he kept punching Joe Son in the balls.

That was pancrase, IIRC. Proto-Pride
Bas Ruten did work back in the day in pancrase. So did the Shamrock bros

My roommate in law school (who got me into MMA) swore he was the GOAT at that time. Even better than Fedor

I'm confused. It's like The Rock isn't playing The Rock.
They know he's The Rock, right?

> I never really got into UFC, but I did see Ken Shamrock fight at the Pontchartrain Center back in the day. The fight lasted 30 seconds because Shamrock picked up his opponent and dropped him on his head.
Fight starts at 4:30

The Safdie bros, all though this time just Benny it looks like, make some of the most depressing & exhausting movies around. They’ve all been really solid, but I’ve never once wanted to watch one again lol. Similar to aronofsky films in that respect.
