Feel it was the true beginning of cable TV pushing the boundaries and bringing a whole new era to TV series.

Did you finish it yet?

It’s on my Mount Rushmore. I think season 5 is the single greatest season of television I have ever seen. Best acting of Whittaker’s career and that’s saying a lot. There would not have been a Breaking Bad without the Shield.

Might be a "hot take", but the Shield is better than the Wire.

Not sure why but it doesn't get mentioned in the same conversation as some of the all time great modern series like The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Band of Brothers but it belongs in the conversation. Brilliant.

I'll never forget watching Ep. 1 - it was one of the first big shows on FX that REALLY towed the line of what was acceptable on Cable TV. It didn't take few episodes to build up or get good like The Wire does.

I think I quit watching after 4 seasons, but I might have to pick it back up after I finish Animal Kingdom.

How far are you into Animal Kingdom? Enjoying it?

It's on my short list to start soon, but I bumped it behind Man on Fire and just saw that TURN is leaving Netflix in 3 weeks and need to finish the last 2 seasons first. I like to rotate 3-4 shows and watch 1 season at a time

Season 5 I think? It was halfway through Season 1 before it really hit its stride for me, but even in Season 5, it's still a good watch. Wife wasn't interested, so it's the show I watch on the weekends before she gets up.

I typically HATE cop shows but loved The Wire, would I enjoy The Shield?

#TeamShield

It doesn't get enough love/discussion in GOAT threads.

Held back by being on basic cable and having to adhere, generally, to "network" guidelines for profanity and stuff at the time.

However, as an overall product, it was very comparable to the usual GOAT candidates (HBO's The Wire and The Sopranos, plus Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc.)

As great as Gandolfini was as Tony Soprano, Chiklis' Vic Mackey was oh so close to that.

If you enjoyed The Wire and The Sopranos, you cannot help but like (if not love) The Shield.

However, I strongly encourage you to just watch it blind - DON'T LOOK UP SPOILERS. It will be much better that way, IMHO.

Again I will plug Clark Johnson.

The sometimes actor (he played the ethical editor, Gus Haynes in the final season of The Wire, as well as Meldrick Lewis in Homicide), he directed the pilot and finale of both The Shield and The Wire (actually 3 of the first 5 episodes of both shows, so his style was really stamped on them throughout their runs), putting him in the running for greatest television director of all time, IMHO.

It’s one of tGOAT television shows. The only knock on it is the opening credit theme song.

It is told from the perspective of the police and one of their precincts and not multiple perspectives but imagine The Wire with more violence, intensity, and much faster pacing.

The Shield, Sopranos, and The Wire all debuted around the same time, and had similar length runs.

The other two might be better shows, but I watched all three during their initial runs, and I enjoyed The Shield the most.

The shield was the first show of its kind I ever watched…Episodic, but with longer arcs.
I didn’t have hbo at the time, so the shield, and later Justified, were brand new concepts for me.
Also, the shield really muddied the lines between protagonist and antagonist. They showed you in the very first episode what a terrible guy Vic was, but they still were able to make him more than sympathetic (very similar to Tony Soprano).
I watched the shield first, so it’s my #1. For me, Justified is next, followed by the wire and the sopranos.
