Let's not forget about Dr. Cox being a bad arse marine, which just makes the movie more awesome.

You're not going to get anyone new to watch it with comments like that out of context.

I watched that movie at release, while living in San Francisco. The theater enjoyed the parking meters being destroyed in the movie

Ed Harris was rock solid.
ETA: well that doesn’t read the same way now.

It’s the first rated R movie I ever saw in theaters. My dad took me. I thought it was awesome then and still love it.

First of all, let me state that I absolutely love the idea that it would be a crossover.
Iirc, there is actually some dialog in the movie about his timeline that at least fits in to the Connery bond films. Obviously it’s the same actor playing a very similar character.
Sadly, I think the biggest thing working against the theory is the reality of money and the world we live in. Way back when, Albert Broccoli wanted to sue the producers of Cannonball Run for Roger Moore’s character in that movie. I think there was also some legal action threatened with the Austin Powers film. The fact is, for Connery to actually be James Bond in the Rock, they would have had to get permission which likely would have meant some money changing hands.

That's why it's called the rock

There was no question Moore was playing a Bond-like character in Cannonball Run. He even had the DB5 with ejection seat.
Not comparable at all to Connery in The Rock where some people wonder if he could be Bond.

Correct.
So I’ll say that while the writers/director/producers of The Rock put Easter eggs in the dialog to support the notion that Mason could be Bond, the fact is the couldn’t/didn’t actually say he was James Bond.
I’d love for the theory to be true, don’t get me wrong. I think it would make a great movie even better.

It really is a great scene. They dont make movies like that anymore.

I will start by saying that I love the Rock - probably my favorite action movie of all time. However, it also has one of the absolutely worst written scenes of exposition in cinema history, and it's painful to watch, especially on repeat viewings.

What is so terrible about that scene?
Uh, you watched any movies or shows that have come out in the last 5 years?

I used to randomly say that FAR more than I’d like to admit. It used to crack me up all the time.

It's just terrible, awful exposition. Almost a textbook case on what not to do. It's a conversation that those two characters would absolutely not have in reality and is written solely for the audience. May as well have tacked an "as you know" in there.
