Why did they get Guy Pearce in old man make-up, instead of just getting an old actor? I mean, I know Guy Pearce is a good actor, but there are plenty of good old actors that could have played that part, and not had to use that really distracting, obviously old man make-up.
This really bothered me.

70 years in the future, it looks like human weapons still succumb to the tropes of sci-fi movies. I half-expected one of the security guys to reveal nukes onboard the "scientific vessel". Otherwise I really enjoyed this movie.

I've watched the Alien movies, but it's been a while and I can't remember the details that most of you can. From that perspective I really enjoyed this movie. I think it's because I didn't have a lot of expectations about what I wanted it to answer about the others. I'm looking forward to re-watching the Alien movies now.

Just saw it, thought it was okay. I too was expecting the space-jockey in its chair chest buster scene.
I wanted it to tie in a little better.

Just saw it and read the whole thread. Lots of interesting theories, critiques, and opinions.
I thought is was a cool movie, but the questions left out there were really too much. To leave that much hanging out there, too me, should mean that you've already gotten the go ahead and full intention to make a sequel. And, this is not the case apparently. Which kinda pisses me off.
ETA: Also, I've learned a lot from this thread about the Alien series. I'm not exactly an expert on that.
So, apparently the Aliens actually have a name? Xenomorph?
And, the Engineers are commonly referred to as space jockeys?

I am still a bit confused on the xenomorph term. It was first mentioned in Aliens, I assumed it was just some alien race, not necessarily the actual Alien.
The Space Jockey term came out in the late 70's after Alien was released. It's what they called the fossilized lifeform in the chair.

Yes to both questions. The alien you see in the Alien quadrilogy was referred to as a xenomorph in Aliens, indicating it had a technical name.
The space jockey term for the engineer originated among the crew on the set of Alien and stuck as a nickname for the "engineer" alien we see at the beginning of Alien.

anyone else interested in my theory that the "space jockeys/engineers" were being visited by their engineers in the beginning? or have we confirmed that they were dropping him off on earth to create the humans?

The snakes came from the ground worms that were infected by the black goo. Since the canisters were made for humans they probably open when in the presence of a human

i have a feeling there is another societal/species layer at play
i don't get why the engineers kept coming back to earth or why they told humans to go to that moon. you could say it was for them to basically judge how long it would take us as a species to get there, but then that doesn't make sense with the engineers going to earth to destroy us
there is a lot of jumbling in the movie that i don't know if it can be unwound.
1. the xenomorph genesis. they have the mural, which means at the least the engineers knew of the species. however, in the movie it took variables (namely, human hosts) that were not present to create the xenomporphs
2. if it took humans to make the facehuger-type creature that led to the xenomorphs (in the jockeys), how did these weapons get developed to the point where they made the jockeys stampede in fear/kill them and stack up the bodies?
3. the black goo's effects were weird. it broke down/changed DNA. i actually thought the guy fricking teh girl with the dragon tattoo was being changed into an engineer. but, on the same token, the guy who was infected via worm-snake seemed to be changing into something similar. there was kind of a pattern (snake-like creatures developed that tried to orally implant eggs) due to the after effects of the goo

Here is a interesting link from the Shag
Interesting take on the first alien. David wasn't the protagonist.
This was reposted on reddit. It's very tl;dr and contains many spoilers, but does have some insightful Ridley Scott quotes:

fwiw the stuff i just posted was nitpicks for this discussion. i thought the movie experience was an 8-8.5 on my scale (which means it was fricking good). i don't get the disappointment by many people, objectively, but i think most wanted more action/tension in the movie

I think the Engineers were dropping off one of their own to start life. And I'm pretty sure both that ship in the beginning and the last ship were the same "arm" type of ship.

I thought the guy who was killed by the snake just plain died while the guy who.had his helmet melted by the acid and fell in the goo was the one who became the zombie.

perhaps i got them mixed up
also let me add that the "zombie scene" did have a dramatic purpose: it let the captain see what they were dealing with. it showcased the scope of danger the black goo had (nobody knew that david poisoned the other guy)

i find a major hole in the theory with the whole concept of self-sacrifice being the central conflict
1. the engineers running were not too concerned with self sacrifice
2. if the humans who displayed self sacrifice in stopping the engineers by ramming their ship showcased redemption, then the engineer getting angry and going after the doctor doesn't fit. that act should have redeemed the humans in his eye, not enraged him so much

I think the bigger the fan you are of the Alien series, the more you were disappointed.

xenomorph is a generic term for alien. they just used that in lieu of any actual scientific term for them, don't read too much into it.
