The Prince of Egypt not being made by Disney is kind of a tragedy

I really think this animated masterpiece has been largely forgotten by most outside of religious communities. Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney to found DreamWorks in order to make this film a reality since Michael Eisner refused to make it (one of Eisner’s biggest frick ups of his career).
Personally I think it’s better than The Ten Commandments, since T10C brushes over the most interesting part of the story: that Rameses and Moses are brothers. That is the heart of this story. This scene where Moses confronts Rameses and Rameses all scene thinks Moses is screwing with him simply overjoyed at his brother’s return, and then when he realizes Moses is serious, it would have gone down as one of the great scenes in Disney history. And then just turning the plagues into a dramatic musical sequence was brilliant since they have been done to death and we know what the plagues were (save for the last one, which that is essential).
But no one brings up this movie anymore. I think most people think Dreamworks started with Shrek or maybe Antz. I really think this film would get much more of the respect it deserves if it were in the Disney Vault or were on Disney+ especially during the quarantine with Passover and Easter. If you haven’t watched it, check it out sometime. Really underrated classic.

I think most who were kids in the 90’s saw it and loved it. I think it is as popular as most animated movies of the time outside the huge ones like Lion King and Toy Story.
Basically I think you’re wrong, it isn’t forgotten and most people agree it’s great

Great movie. Wanna say it also had a great soundtrack too

It sympathized with Jews too much, not really something Disney finds interesting...

I'm not even religious and I love this movie.

I remember they had a lot of big name singers/groups on the soundtrack and that is it.

I’m guessing you grew up in an evangelical household. It is popular in religious communities as I pointed out, but not outside of it for the most part. It’s exposure worldwide isn’t even a tenth of what the Lion King and Toy Story are.

Or Mel Gibson.

Both Prince of Egypt and Anastasia were overshadowed in that era, but both were pretty great.

Yeah, that should have been one as well, but I think it would largely be regarded around Mulan’s levels. The Prince of Egypt I can’t think of anything I’d change about it. I think it would be pretty much a widespread consensus that it was one of the Top 5 animated films Disney ever made.

It's not a tragedy at all. It's perfect as is.

A great soundtrack it was indeed. One of Hans Zimmer's best compositions to date.

I’m saying the film doesn’t change at all, just that it’s distributed by Disney. Katzenberg left Disney because he claimed this could be their Oscar winner, but they stupidly chose Pocahontas instead, which is a joke these days. That’s what people aren’t understanding is that they had their B Teams working on Aladdin and The Lion King, with their A-Team wastefully working on Pocahontas. You have this film follow The Lion King instead of Pocahontas, then the Disney Renaissance would have gone on for another 3 years. Pocahontas being just mediocre is really what started the end to the Disney Renaissance.

Then I’m honestly curious why you think the public at large has the same exposure to it as the Lion King. Like in China, I think more people have been exposed to Toy Story than the Exodus story at large. Their exposure and recognition isn’t remotely comparable.

??????
Did you read my post? I said other than the huge animated movies like The Lion King and Toy Story it’s similarly appreciated.
Looking at the animated movies Disney produced in that era it’s less popular than Mulan and Pocahontas but I’d say it’s as popular or more than all the other ones made in that time period (1994-2000 is what I looked at)

People say this like The Emperor’s New Groove, Hercules, and Lilo & Stich weren’t excellent movies

It’s maybe not forgotten but definitely a little off the radar
