The ending could have been less Spielberg - corny IMO.

I would preferred an ending more like The Thing - instead of that happy buddy music at the end, the survivors (and Dreyfuss should have probably died) are left floating...victorious but full of dread...bobbing in the water unable to make it back...and the real Jaws music comes back as it fades to night to match the opening scene.

Are there other sharks? We don't know.

Good to hear about Fargo. I picked it up the other day and plan on watching it tonight.

What do you consider to be the perfect movie? It doesn't have to be your favorite movie, or even what you consider the greatest movie ever made.

Hmmmm . . . very interesting question with the qualifiers. And difficult to answer. The following take into account genre and context.

To Kill a Mockingbird

Vertigo/Rear Window/Notorious (sorry, can't help it)

Chinatown

24 Hour Party People (I'm serious)

The Third Man

Night of the Hunter (the only movie Laughton ever directed . . . was panned in the beginning and he never directed again . . . but it was great)

Alien

Hell, I don't know. I could name more that come close.

It is probably impossible to write the perfect book, produce the perfect movie or in fact perform any task perfectly, but the theory that attainment of perfection is impossible aside, here are a few very nearly perfect movies that have not yet been mentioned.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Rosemary's Baby

Cinema Paradiso

Groundhog Day

Apocalypse Now

Paths of Glory

and

Into the Wild

Good one, as is the previously mentioned Cool Hand Luke.

Very good choices.

I liked it until it became fashionable for suburbanites at the multiplexes to see it and claim they've seen an "art movie".

Did that seem snobbish?

Another movie that I would consider near perfect is Children of Men.

Agreed. As far as current movies, I loved how there was no blatant advertisements. Hell, even the cars were designed for the movie.

The defining characteristic is its long takes, some of which are so overly complicated, it is amazing how great they ended up.

The cast is great and the book was altered perfectly for the screen.
