The force of nerds is powerful here. First half of the movie dark and gloomy, I was wondering how kids would enjoy it Yet, but second half and espically last 20 minutes really rocked so it even out.

So then, why would anyone ever make an R movie?
It's not super necessary for Star Wars to be R since the bar for R is mostly a few words and gore
Rogue one could have been much darker and still remained pg-13. It was also still a great damn good movie.

Saw this yesterday, and it was OKAY. I didn't really feel much character development, just felt all pretty shallow, but at least it wasn't entirely cliche and had some grit to it, which made it unique in a way. It was solid, but nothing crazy that I'd really care about if it wasn't for the originals.

I don't think I'll see a 3-D movie in theaters again.
I don't even know how 3-D makes any money. From my perspective I can only a see one or two details in the center fold of the screen and then the background is completely blurred. 3-D is shite beyond shite. Its cool for one or two experiences.

Also the Forrest W. role was just dumb. He was awful
Agreed. He was irrelevant. They could have easily not had him in the movie at all and it wouldn't have made a difference.

I think most characters were developed well-enough, and we knew they were all going to die before going to the movie.
So the characters were developed before the movie?
The characters were very very poorly developed within the movie. Its pretty bad to depend on outside assumptions, especially since the originals came out 40 years ago.

This may be the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back.

Haven't seen it yet - am taking the kids after Christmas - but do how do they justify all the new stormtrooper costumes (like the black death troopers) that were never in 4, 5, and 6? Is it more of something to attract new audiences? If so, then that's kind of lame.

Just saw Rogue One last night. It started out pretty slow for my tastes but improved as the film progressed. Enjoyed the various character cameos. CGI Tarkin looked fine to me. Yes, the main character/cast development was lacking, but then again we only get to see these characters for one film. I Really enjoyed the last 30 minutes. Dovetails nicely into Episode IV. Overall, I thought it was a good film. It's tough to rank it though.

Well, you've got to have something new to sell to the kiddos. That being said, we don't ever see the "shore troopers" again because there's no tropical beaches in 4,5, and 6. And the "death troopers" are the personal guard of a specific character that doesn't appear in the original trilogy.

And after a few days to think about it and talk it over with a few people, I think I know how I feel about the movie. I had a great time watching it, but I don't feel like I watched a Star Wars movie. Instead, I feel like I do after playing one of the Star Wars video games. Not that the movie was like a video game, just that I got more immersed in the world and battles and places instead of the characters and their adventures. I still liked them for the most part, but they weren't the highlight of the experience for me.

didn't like that they called him Governor Tarkin instead of Grand Moff. Treat the man with the respect he earned, since he was the first ever Grand Moff. If this truly was same timeline as "A New Hope" which the ending showed, then he'd be a Grand Moff, not just a sector governor.
haha nerd

They were ground attack specialists. We did see different ground attack specialist in every star wars movie ever.
Sand troopers in IV, Snow troopers in V, Forrest troopers in VI.

maybe he was named Grand Moff after assuming the powers of the director and the governor of the sector and his Moff title.

STILL haven't seen it, but plan to when I get a little time. Some gripes I've read, and my opinion:
somebody commented that they don't see it as Star Wars unless there's a couple Skywalkers and a good dose of the Force.
I'm the other way; my original favorite was Han Solo, and I have always been greatly interested in the rest of the galaxy. I'm actually tired of the Force users being the primary focus of every film in the franchise. The prequel Jedi were like comic book superheroes... I'm ready for some more gunslingers.
Others comment on the different Trooper gear, and possibly the spaceships.
To me, that's an "oh well". The prequels seemed to have more advanced craft (the Naboo ships) than the originals, despite being decades earlier. Didn't bother me. Like some people said, part of it is what environment you are in.

I'm puzzled how Vader goes from annihilating dozens of rebels like that then literally day later partake in the painfully bland saber fight with Obi Wan in ANH
A New Hope was an independent low budget film was it not?

I saw it yesterday, I really liked it. Seems like the only Star Wars movie so far that felt like there was a war going on. I'm not overly fond of prequel movies but this did an admirable job leading up to the events of 4.
