The downside is that they will almost for sure never give us the dark gritty movie that we want

What is it about any of the Star Wars movies that makes you think it would be better "darker and grittier?"

You're implying that there should be something darker than Empire Strikes Back and Rogue One. Why?

This is the most successful movie franchise of all time, without overdoing "dark" and "gritty."

We just got a Disney Star Wars movie with two cities blown up, every major character met in this movie dying, and a scene with Vader mowing down rebels like they're children and people are complaining about the tone? Star Wars will never be full out dark nor should it be and this was a great execution of dark tones with the Star Wars fun as well. Ask DC how that really dark tone is working out for them right now.

Was Saw Gurerra really needed in this film? One of the worst characters I've seen in a movie recently. He annoyed the heck out of me.

I just don't think they were going for a "heros journey" in a one off story

This was about the story and the characters happened to be involved

The story suffers because of this, though.

There are lots of "one-off" movies with character investment and good plot. Ben-Hur, Gladiator, the Wizard of Oz, Outlaw Josey Wales, Taxi Driver, the Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, even Star Wars, when viewed independent of its sequels, is one of the very best examples of the hero's journey.

You CAN have it all in a movie. You just have to want it... and have the right people writing it.

Sure, but nobody is asking for it to be fully dark and gritty all the time. There is room in the universe for them to do one truly dark film because some of the things that happen in the full story around these characters was truly dark. What most are asking for is a spin off movie that is truly dark and gritty that really explores that side of the universe. That doesn't mean every single film they make again has to be that way. Seeing the stuff that is rumored to have been taken out of this movie, it is stuff that a large section of the fan base would love to see.

ETA: This film was just a taste of areas that could really be explored. It had some of the darker moments in the franchise, but also showed how much more they could do, but won't.

DC just can't make movies. Dark or not, they are just terrible at it. Logan looks amazing for Marvel and it is going to be pretty damn dark.

I wanted more of Vader at his compound or whatever. That was freaking awesome.

Really looked like Barad-Dur from Lord of the Rings.

When your run time is 133m and about 45m is one large action scene, you don't have enough time. Especially when you have to introduce about 6-8 key characters in different places

Would have been cool to see him doing some type of force training or something there. The tank scene was good too, but having something where he is really honing his abilities in the force would have been neat to see.

I would bet money the original cut had a more important Saw Gurerra role and the reshoot neutered him.

You can't straight cut him since it explains why Jyn was necessary.

I was more annoyed with how they made his character. Heavily robotic and armored man with a breathing apparatus and a cape. Hmmm.....where have I seen that before? Plus his strained talking/accent just got on my nerves.

Well the key word there is Logan "looks" good but you won't know for sure until the movie comes out. However Wolverine is a darker character to begin with. It also works with a Batman when done right. The problem is making something that is not supposed to be super dark (Superman) into a dark gritty movie. Star Wars has an excellent balance of darkness and lighthearted part that makes it so great so I just don't think an all dark Star Wars movie (sure there are books that are but that a different story) would work.

On another note, the score for this movie was absolutely terrible for a Star Wars movie.

Great. We're not talking about making stuff that isn't dark, dark. We're talking about really exploring the depths of what is already dark.

A Darth Vader one off focused on him hunting down Jedi directly after RotS could easily be the best movie in the franchise.

Agreed. None of the songs were memorable at all, and there were so many over the top orchestral themes playing when nothing was going on, like people just walking. It was very off-putting.

The only thing that irked me about the ending Vader sequence was how he was slinging rebels around back and forth, grabbing things, cutting through them like butter, but he couldn't simply force grab the disk out of the guy's hand that was standing there for like 5 minutes before passing it through.

I feel you, but does Vader know in that instant that the guy has the disk and is trying to smuggle it out?

Hard to tell. I just went with they were all in his way to getting onto the ship where the disc was, they must be destroyed. Only way to take that scene to avoid the mentioned issue.

Just got out, enjoyed it. Vader going ham at the end may be my favorite action sequence in the Star Wars universe.
