Too many closeup shots of the spaceships,
The shot that looked like a go-pro glued to the port side was...well, I did not care for it.

I didn't think that those were supposed to be the actual New York Yankees.

Not sarcastic at all. I liked that design much more than the typical human AI form that we see in most movies.

They are largely homage to the monoliths and HAL from 2001. Monoliths for the general design, and they designed TARS to be the exact opposite personality of HAL.

I was expecting to actually see the remains of what a city looked like.

I did, and I'm still waiting on an explanation.

I think professional sports leagues don't exist due to whatever big conflict or events led up to the start of the film. The Yankees in the film we're like a traveling circus act.

what explanation?

I thought it was pretty obvious that it was to show where we were as a civilization at that point. People didn't have the money for many non essentials, sports being one of them.

I don't see anything online about it being the actual Yankees. Lots of folks assuming that they were, and the explanations ranging from them being reduced to a barnstorming pro-team and their having to move their stadium to the farms in order to get fans in.

Seems like an odd visual shortcut to say, "Society is on a vast decline".

We saw no other cities or towns outside of that farm town or that space station.

I think that is where the actual yankees played, to my memory they didn't show any big buildings in this movie it was all farm land. I remember that the earth was drastically reduced in population, so it is possible that they destroyed a lot of big cities and turned them into farm producing land. I would think amazing cities like New York would be abandon because there is such a heavy demand for food. People live close to their work meaning farms.

But I don't think it really matters if they are the yankees are not the point is that society abandoned entertainment for the sake of survival. I think Nolan is trying to use that to show how destructive that really is.

I'll have to look for that on the second viewing. If that's the case, I'd say they were the future equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters.
