I remember being downvoted for that statement awhile back.

Well…

quote:

original star and writer Mindy Kaling recently told “Good Morning America” that “The Office” just couldn’t be made today. Why? “That show is so inappropriate now,” Kaling said.

“The writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now,” Kaling added. “Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show.”

Aka:

The Writers themselves have changed and would not have the balls to do it, and would censor themselves.

She's so close to realizing mainstream America isn't woke and wants to just laugh, but she can't quite get there.

100% exactly. Its popular because America isn't a bunch of cancelling wokesters, only the EXTREMELY vocal minority.

Its not the audience, its Hollywood/writers/actors/producers would not have the balls to do it.

They've already cancelled the Benihana Christmas episode. You'll never see it on Comedy Central again.

That is literally the entire point of the show. It is a comedy based on how out of place the inappropriateness is in certain social situations. If the the jokes were considered/supported as appropriate, it would just be a show about normal life.

the office was pretty progressive for its time, asian people, black people, gay people

The main character in the show is a white man that routinely makes himself look like an idiot around minorities. It was inappropriate at the time it was made, that is what made it funny. The only difference now is that certain contingents scoff at inappropriateness now when they use to laugh at it

Predicting that episode will stop being shown at one point.

They already deleted the blackface Christmas scene with Mose.

Right. Some of these writers (Kaling, Schur, etc) are super woke and kept pushing things to the point they are now.

I always laugh when Michael tells Kelly that she should have been the Bend It Like Beckham girl for Halloween Such a snapshot in time.

Michael's colored/collared people/greens statement was shocking even then (but then that was the joke).

Michael was Archie Bunker if Archie thought he had the social compassion of Michael (Meathead) Stivic.

I’ve bought the box set due to knowing some episodes would be edited/cancelled. I checked to make sure the box set wasn’t edited.

"oh good, I'm just in time for Ping"

Michael unintentional racism was one of the best parts of the show. People are so soft these days.

-thinking Stanly can play bball
- telling Oscar he will call him come baseball season or boxing
-Do black people like pizza?
-wait maybe the warehouse staff is down in the furnace
-thinking IT guy was a terrorist

List goes on and on and its all gloriously funny.

Mr. Brown: Mr. Brown.
Michael Scott: Oh! Okay first test, I will not call you that.
Mr. Brown: Well it's my name, it's not a test.

Such greatness.

Who is as woke as they come.

The point of it was to highlight ignorance in a funny way. Its the same thing with Blazing Saddles (which is pretty much cancelled at this point).
