I decided to check the local 70mm IMAX showings and they're pretty much all sold out aside from a few seats in the front for the next week.

This film is going to have legs, it's definitely crossing a billion

Just saw it, I really thought it was awesome. I have read both the Illiad and the Odyssey, I’m very well-versed in the story and the history. I thought it did a really good job of sticking as close to the source material as you could for a movie covering such a broad large story. I absolutely loved all of the callouts to the sea people and the collapsing of society, I thought it was fantastic they included that as an overarching important theme, considering a lot of historians think this story tells the beginning of the “bronze age collapse”. I watched it with a friend who knew nothing about the story and seeing him freak out when Polyphemus showed up, get grossed out and shocked by the Cerci, and be genuinely pumped when Odysseus kills the suitors showed me it was a well made movie.


Sure, they could’ve put other stuff in and left some other stuff out, but overall the movie did a great job of fitting in as much as as it could and still telling a compelling story that made you actually care about some of the characters.

The fact that people are unironically throwing around the phrase “historically accurate” when referring to the Odyssey is itself a farcical concept.

Nobody knows if the Trojan War even happened or how many, if any, of the events or characters are based on real historical figures or just sort of a smashing together of various Near East stories and myths. Or completely made up for entertainment value. Even the language of Homer, take at face value as true, has been argued and disputed by academics and translators for 2,500 years (and that’s ignoring the obvious “historical accuracy” issue raised by gods and goddesses being important participatory characters in a lot of the events).

Plato and his crowd, who lived 4,000 years after the Odyssey was written, debated over facts in the story (mainly how many of the characters were gay: spoiler Plato basically thought they were all gay).

Point being it’s a “historical” story who’s underlying facts we have virtually zero knowledge of, originally told orally and then written down so long ago and in a style so hard to decipher that the meaning and nuance have been debated for thousands of years.

But Grok will cut through all of that noise and give us the unvarnished historically accurate Odyssey.

Also, Plato wrote about characters in the Iliad, not the Odyssey.

Homer wrote about Achilles' wife and son, and how he wept over the fact that he never found a wife for Patroclus.

That’s an example of reciting textbook propaganda.

He did not. Any mention of Achilles' wife comes from other myths/stories/Greek plays. He has a captive slave in The Iliad.
