Exactly, the reveal of his memory about Troy and the hidden trauma caused him to not come home but we see in the actual events that’s not the reason. They basically undid the journey with the reveal. Same thing with the view of the gods through Odysseus’ perspective. He invokes and follows the gods then he disregards and belittles them whenever it’s expedient to pushing the story forward. The actual Odyssey part of it felt like it was simply in Nolan’s way and he just wanted to get through it to connect the beginning to the end.

Is it not? I thought it was. It started from the very beginning when he decided not to follow Agamemnon and his entourage back to the Greek mainland via the most direct route. He wanted to go a completely different route that allowed them to sight see. As the film went on, it became clear that it was a deliberate attempt not to go straight home because he couldn't live with the shame of what he did.

Then, as the journey got longer and longer, he obviously wanted to get him and his men back to Ithaca. However, after he lost his men at sea due to the decisions he made, he imposed upon himself an additional self-exile and allowed himself to be drunk on lotus flowers for the better part of the next seven years. He couldn't live with the guilt and didn't think he could look his wife in the eye due to the shame he felt.

That's why when he finally explains his absence to Penelope in a round about way, he never looks at her. He's talking to her with his back turned, explaining what happened during the fall of Troy.

Yes but you’re forgetting he thought they’d make it home before Agamemnon and the rest of them. That’s one scene where Odysseus felt like the real one. Very prideful and arrogant. He wasn’t traumatized at all right there.

Did he though?

That's certainly what he told his men but that's not exactly what transpired, is it? Especially when you consider what is revealed later...it seems to me he wasn't being very honest with them at that particular point in time.

Ok, if you want to go that route I’ll do you one better. The entire thing was a drug induced delusion. None of it really happened.

Deadline already has it making over $120 million. I don't think the World Cup Final is going to impact viewings as much in the United States as it will other places. I think it finishes between $123-125 million by Monday morning.

Yeah Deadline dropped some Saturday numbers this AM.

quote:

SATURDAY UPDATE: Not sunny weather, nor World Cup is hindering Universal‘s The Odyssey which as of this morning is on its way to becoming Christopher Nolan‘s best global opening ever with $257.8M, which puts away his previous highs of The Dark Knight Rises ($249M WW debut), The Dark Knight ($198M WW) and Oppenheimer ($180M WW). As far as the top global openings year-to-date, it’s the best for a live-action movie quite easily, but it’s third overall behind Universal/Illumination/Nintendo’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($372.5M WW) and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 ($312M WW).

With domestic at $120.5M, the best live-action debut in North America YTD, The Odyssey is shaping up for a $137.3M opening in 73 offshore markets including UK & Ireland, France, Australia, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil

Saw this yesterday and it is tremendous.

Acting, cinematography, pacing...it's a fantastic film.

Those who have decided to dislike it probably won't be swayed, but that's their loss.

You know you're just describing human nature, right? It works the same regardless of whether someone decided to like it or dislike it.

I wish people would just watch a movie and not turn into some culture war bullshite. But I guess that's what gets engagement these days. Expect to see a lot of these articles this week

Turn into or simply address what the director produced?

Did people have this argument about Project Hail Mary or Deception? Why do you think that is?

More than anything these numbers prove these people live in their own bubble that doesn’t stretch that far in this country, they just happen to have large numbers on a few platforms that make it seem like it’s a broader opinion

People are tired of the culture war stuff on both ends, except a small few folks that post a lot and live it everyday

They believe grifters who are just using them for engagement. So many of these dudes on Twitter that have been bashing this movie for months went out and watched it on opening day. They're literally telling people to skip it but it's ok for them to watch it
