this is funny b/c i just finished a re-watch of season 1 2 nights ago and i was going to make a thread about it, so i'll just post here
on first watch i did not like the constant recycling of love interests, but now that i've seen it already it's whatever
that first season though, wow. it's incredible. the acting is great, especially Guthrum, Skorpa, and Ubba. they're just so incredible in the roles.
also that final fight is always so emotional to me. it actually really hurts the rest of the series b/c nothing ever comes close to that level of emotion in the various conflicts.
after season 1 the series is kind of a road show, which has its own positives...the Alfred-Uhtred stuff in season 3 is a very fitting end to that arc, though. other than that, though, the weight just isn't as heavy b/c of the lack of overreaching conflict. the Kjarten revenge plot is good, but cathartic on a much lesser level

I read through to when Uhtred helped Alfred out of the swamp and retake his Kingdom. I think he was given a wife and some back 40 farm. He mad. I quit reading afterwards because I could see where this was going. Uhtred gets mad, makes a mistake, Alfred punishes him, Uhtred makes amends.

im in season 3 and generally like it. My general synopsis is Utred does good shite for Alfred all the time, but not under the christian umbrella, so Alfred cannot ever give him credit.
edit: he's literally saved both of Alfred's kids lives, yet still constantly on the chopping block. I think Alfred envies Utred's free spirit

I was very hesitant towards this tv show as the books are of one my favorite series, but the adaptation has been spectacular. If anything, they could use more episodes per season, not less.
For those who have read the most recent book...
...was anyone else disappointed in it. The writing seemed different to me, almost as if it was not Cornwell but a fan of his writing it. Weird over-explanation of things, boring dialogue and Uhtred making really in-Uhtredlike decisions (maybe dementia is setting in?)
It was definitely the worst book of the series for me.
For those who have read the most recent book...
...was anyone else disappointed in it. The writing seemed different to me, almost as if it was not Cornwell but a fan of his writing it. Weird over-explanation of things, boring dialogue and Uhtred making really in-Uhtredlike decisions (maybe dementia is setting in?)
It was definitely the worst book of the series for me.

I went through my wifes family tree and i followed it to 2 kings of england, Edgar The Peaceful and his dad Edmond 1 The magnificent. Come to find out Edmond is the son of Edward the Edler, who was the son of Alfred the Great.

I did the same thing. Traced my tree back to Edward III (through his son John of Gaunt), which eventually takes you to Alfred.

The story is of the unification of the disparate English kingdoms (Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria). Did you see the unification of the four kingdoms? No? Then no, they couldn't have done in two seasons, you sniveling earsling.

Second, The Last Kingdom doesn't drag on at all and, in fact, is so fast paced that it covers wide swaths of shite through exposition.

It wasn't the 'worst' for me. I actually enjoyed reading about him making a series of blunders for the first time and seeing how he was able to work his way out. But I wonder if Cornwell is thinking, in his Uhtred's older age, his military instincts are overridden by his humanity (and affinity for women) sometimes. His writing continues to allow the imagination to paint the perfect setting.
For whatever reason, the fourth book, Sword Song, was the most boring. And War of the Wolf seemed to be just filler... this most recent one was more historic in nature.

Various genealogical websites. It can be a bitch to get started, but gets fairly easy once you reach any important historical figure. Sometimes just takes some luck when looking for a missing link.

I have had decent luck using Family Search, Find A Grave, & Wiki Tree.
Found some of my ancestors were friends with George Washington & was able to go read letters between them that are on the National Archives website.

4 episodes in to my first watch and I like it a lot so far. It's been on my list for a while, I'm not sure why I put it off for so long

I still read every book, but you’re right. The early books were best. At this point of the latest book he must be in his 70s by now.
A few books ago, there was a chapter told from the first person view of Uhtred Jr. I thought the series would continue like that but it’s never happened again.
The book series really should’ve ended after Uhtred won Bebbamburg. That was always his overarching goal.

I love and have read almost everything by Bernard Cornwall. But you are right. It was like he has lost interest in Uhtred and just mashed out a tale for pestering fans. He should have stopped at 10 and moved on to something fresh.
