I just watched this movie for the first time, spoilers

the acting was great and it was suspenseful enough. What’s the boards opinion of this movie? And I’m talking about the American version.

I feel like it’s one of those movies that intentionally leaves a bunch of clues out to try and surprise you, but at the end of the day the bad guy was pretty much the first guy I guessed. The girl being alive wasn’t a shock but I was surprised at who it was, I thought the random B plot of taking down the Swedish billionaire at the end was weird, almost like a totally different movie. I’m guessing that’s because it’s a book and they were trying to fit all of the plot points from the book into the movie.

What ever happened to the sequels? I guess I could google it but this is just easier.

I saw both versions only once, the American one in theaters so it's been a while; but, seemed to recall liking the Swedish version better.

If you’re talking about the Fincher version, the idea that he would shepherd an entire series, even as just a producer, was always a long shot. He just doesn’t do franchises.

That being said, Sony did release a follow-up called The Girl In The Spider’s Web in 2016 that was not based on an original Stieg Larson book but one of the follow-up books written by another author.

It wasn’t good.

I always guessed that it did not perform well at the box office, so they sequels were not made. This is what I found when I looked it up:

Budget
$90,000,000 (estimated)

Gross US & Canada
$102,515,793

That is a bold statement, because the Craig movie is really, really good.

It made $240 million worldwide, which when you subtract a very steep break even point estimate of 2.25 x budget (90 x 2.25 = $203 million), it still made a healthy $27 million profit. Under normal circumstances, that would get you at least one more sequel.

It wasn’t box office that stopped the sequels. It was the fact that the sequels to the Fincher movie were always long shots. He just wanted to explore that world for one movie and move on. And once you don’t have Fincher, all the other dominos fall, because you’re not getting Craig or Mara back without him.

Makes you wonder what they spent the money on. Is Craig that big of a name at that time? I know Mara was a relative unknown. I mean...it was based basically in 2 houses. No special effects. I don't understand.

Daniel Craig has probably never been a hotter actor than in 2011. He had come off two successful Bond movies (QoS wasn’t good but it made money).

I can’t find an official statement of his salary for Dragon Tattoo, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he got $20 million base salary up front and a percentage of the gross.

Oh yeah.

He was in his James Bond run before the character fizzled. Skyfall came out just a little bit after this movie. He also had 2 Spielberg movies under his belt (Munich and Tintin).

I read the book and have seen both versions of the movie - all three media were great.

I found it to be a pretty typical whodunnit wrapped in a pretty exterior. I felt bad for Lisbeth when she saw Daniel Craig with another woman.

I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t one I felt the need to go back and rewatch.

I liked it and liked the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross's cover of Zeppelin's Immigrant Song at the beginning

I thought it was fantastic. Rooney killed that character. And no, while the Swedish one was good too, it was not better.

This is true, but the Swedish version is still a little better IMO. Mostly because Noomi Rapace is a better Lisbeth overall.

I enjoyed both versions and I loved the book, which is the definition of a slow burn.

I always Thought it was funny that these were written sorta as a hobby for Larson who was an inv estimator journalist. You know the main character who sleep with literally every attractive female in the series was just him in the rough drafts.
