As long as you go in knowing it's Asimov-adjacent or that his books are loosely followed to provide a basis- it's a great show.

Haven’t read the books but I’m enjoying the series.

*I did buy Foundation but have yet to crack it open.

I've gotten to a point that if Apple TV has a sci-fi show, then I'm going to watch it. Nearly every single one of their Sci-fi shows have been winners in my view.

This. My favorite storyline of the show, the Cleon clones, is wholly made up for the show. The Seldon/Gail/Salvor storyline gets weird in some places. Jared Harris is obviously good, but the chemistry between the three actors isn’t as good as the Cleons

Made the mistake of reading 2 books. Was hoping for that. Got nothing close. Idc to finish it and keep falling asleep when my wife puts it on.

Tolkien is my favorite author of all time and I was able to finish Rings of Power. This is further off source than Rings of Power was. I couldn't finish season one. Just don't feel like watching another show with one of my favorite authors source to be slammed by writers who don't care about telling a story true to the source. I told my wife about the first few episodes and she didn't even give it a shot and she couldn't give two shits about woke stuff, I don't think I've ever heard her say the word woke for that matter It's just her favorite series of all-time and she didn't want to watch a botched version of it.

That being said, I 100% can see why someone would like it. It is a quality sci-fi show, no doubt about it. If it was called The Crisis or something and didn't claim to be Foundation/Asimov, I'd still be watching it. Maybe petty on my part, but o well.

If you can disconnect it from the source material you might find you enjoy it. Don’t worry about what you wanted it to be, enjoy it for what it is.

I've read the books before this show came out.

An abomination.

I've read the entirety of the series and couldn't fathom how they would go about making a series directly from the books.

*props feet up on therapists couch*

And I know that. I think I watched all the way up to the final episode or two of S1. It was a very well made show. I'm not sure on the budget, but you'd think it was high dollar based on the way it looks.

I just couldn't disconnect. Once they got to the clones political stuff I just couldn't anymore. The clones had basically become the main/most compelling part of the story. I just couldn't watch a Foundation show that's mainly about something that didn't even exist in Foundation

I think I've seen I, Robot a few times. All before I read the books. After reading the book I'm like ok yea that would have been impossible to do that book correctly. Even though they went with the wrong theme. I don't agree with the "you can't do a Foundation true to the source" argument. You can. I'm not saying it's the easiest source to follow, but it's possible to do it without completely changing the entire story.

*sigh*

Pretend it’s not based on the Asimov novel at all. It’s pretty solid if you can do that. The genetic dynasty is an interesting concept by itself from a scientific and moral perspective.

So . . .

Why not just make an original story based on that?

They literally say it is “based on” the works of Asimov.

“Based on” is not original numbnuts.

Psychohistory is still there. Many of the characters are still there.

I can do a pathetic, laughing emoji too if you think it makes my opinion stronger. Didn’t work on yours, so I guess I’ll leave it off.

If you’re too rigidly attached to the source material you’ll likely never enjoy any adaptation of it. Expect to be perpetually disappointed in the future. This is just reality. I wish you the best.

The show is great! And I agree with whoever said it looks expensive, but it is actually shot pretty cheap so i think they will keep it going as long as they can.

Yeah it is based on the novels but more just the premise.
