Actually, the German guy they let do earlier IS the same guy who, at the end, shoots Tom Hanks, and is then shot by the Upham character you call the reporter. The German recognizes him.
The German who kills Mellish with the knife looks like the same one they let go, crewcut and all, but is not the same character.
I only know this because I thought the same as you and learned this sometime later--went back and looked at the DVD.
Dang. I thought that was the same german. Oh well, I hate Upham anyway. Wasn't he like cowering in the stairwell while Mellish was being killed? Maybe I'll hate him for that.

Everytime I watch that scene, I thank God I didn't have to face that.
I was only in high school at the time, but I still can't believe that Shakespeare in Love beat out SPR for an Oscar. It almost seems criminal.
This among others is a big reason why the Oscars need a "Best Scene" award. If the entire movie gets the shaft, then at least recognize the greatness of that scene

Or better yet, don't give the Best Picture to undeserving flavor of the month movies?

It is so intense it is one of the few things that has overwhelmed me when watching a film. The last time I watched the film I could not watch the opening thirty minutes because it feels so real and to think what others sacrificed just weighed too heavily on me.

It makes me uncomfortable to think about. I can't imagine being in one of those landing crafts and knowing that as soon as those doors were lowered, there was a good probability that there was bullet out there with your name on it....and there's nothing you could do about it. It must've been pure hell.

I think we ALL hate him for that.

This is why Eisenhower wanted mostly untested, new troops coming off those boats. He didn't want kids who knew what hell they were going to go through before those doors dropped. Scary shite.

I remember how quiet and drained everyone was when they left the theater. I've never seen anything like it. The movie ended and everyone got up and walked out lost in their own thoughts.

Anything WW2 messes with me really badly. The scene where they are taking an airfield in the Pacific messed with me for weeks.

This is still the most intense battle reenactment I have ever seen. This is a great film, too!
Agree with both statements

I think the opening battle scenes in "Enemy at the Gates" gives "Saving Private Ryan" a good run for the money. Loved both.

The worst of many awful Oscar decisions.

Two things that get me every time:
If your Higgins boat driver lined you boat up with a german machine gun nest, the second your door dropped you were all dead
If your Higgins boat driver opened the doors too soon or he freaked out and backed up with the door down you drowned
Without exception in either case
