Saw the beginning last night and it was the first time in a long time. I do not understand how the opening scene in Iraq is connected to Regan at all. Any explanations out there?

I've always thought it was just Merrin's understanding that the demon is out there again and the foreshadowing that he'll come across it at some point.

And I say "again" because it is mentioned that Merrin was a part of an exorcism before the events of the movie and that exorcism almost killed him. I think it's supposed to be assumed it is the same demon.

Don't think the beginning has anything to do with Regan other than she happens to be the one who eventually brings the demon & priest together.

I haven't seen the movie in 20+ years, so someone may have better insight. That's always been my opinion though.

That's a statue of the demon Pazuzu. It's a foreshadowing to Pazuzu-the same demon possessing Reagan.

So, Regan was just a random choice?

Yeah I never understood that either. Usually one has to choose possession. In this film, it just seemingly happens to Reagan for no earthly reason at all.

Says most possession movies. Somebody plays with a ouija board, shite goes awry. Or your dad made a mistake, pay the price! There’s usually a reason the event happens and it’s usually a lesson learned in a harsh way.

Neither one of these is choosing to be possessed though.

I really don't. Were there no signs before that? Like, everything starts after she's played with it?

She's in the basement messing with it.

I believe it's right before all hell breaks loose.

All of the replies are kinda right but not really. Father Merrin finds an artifact of the demon in a dig in Iraq. When the artifact is unearthed, it releases the demon. This is shown with the various bad omens that immediately follow such as the clock stopping, almost getting run over by a carriage holding a grotesque, demonic looking person and the creepy guy with the fake eye staring at Merrin. Merrin realizes what may be happening and starts to take his medication. Eventually he heads back to the dig site and discovers the giant demon statue that resembles the artifact. He now knows that the demon has been released, and that it is only a matter of time before he must encounter the demon again, hence the foreshadowing standoff.
