I have never seen this movie. Is it one of those must see movies? I've seen clips and it looks ok. Just not sure if it's one of those must see.

It’s a bit of a slog getting through the first act with the hunting trip and the wedding, but it is necessary for building your understanding of the characters and the town so you can see the impacts the war has on everyone. I really, really like the Deer Hunter, but I can understand why it might not be for everyone. You definitely have to kind of digest it vice just sitting down and burning through it because you needed something to watch. for ME, it's a must see. but your mileage may vary.

The cast/acting is great. The movie itself is a chore to get through.

Great cast and great movie, but a bit of a slow burn and hard to watch.

It was a chore the first time, liked it better the second time through 4 decades later, mostly because of the actors.

At the time it came out I lived in Pittsburgh and it captures that well. Aside from the deer hunting scenes in the Cascades. WTF? Nothing east of the Rockies looks remotely like where they were hunting. Beautiful scenery, but it shattered suspension of disbelief for me the first time through, and I still think it is stupid when they worked so hard to make the Pittsburgh steel workers authentic.

A slow burn with some very tense and disturbing scenes.

As previous post notes, the deer hunting locale was a head scratcher considering where they lived.

As others have pointed out, it's a very slow burn. HOWEVER, the final act, especially the ending moments, make it all worth while. It's some of the best things put to film, but it would not have the same impact if not for the slow burn.

I've seen it once many years ago, and I have no interest to ever sit through it again. I still remember it though, because its impact was that profound. Definitely watch it one.

It's fantastic and probably underrated. One of it's themes is in regard to the forgotten victims in wartime, who are the friends and families left behind, and what they have to deal with.
It also has the best wedding scene in any movie ever made, including The Godfather.

Meryl Streep was gorgeous in this movie. There’s that.

I had to watch it twice because the wedding put me to sleep and I just couldn't get into it. It's definitely a slow burn, and on 2nd viewing, I understand why it's held in such high regard.

I guess I would put it in the same category as Deliverance, great movie that I really don't have any desire to rewatch.

Really??

At the 51st Academy Awards, it was nominated for nine Academy Awards, and won five: Best Picture, Best Director for Cimino, Best Supporting Actor for Walken, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. It was Meryl Streep's first Academy Award nomination (for Best Supporting Actress).

After Michael CimIno won Best Director and then the Academy saw his next picture...they wanted their vote back.

He shot so many roles of film and was so over a budget he thought he'd outdo himself with Heaven's Gate.

I've said it before....It's a must-see movie only if you're on a flight from L.A. to NY because the movie will still be playing when you land....

And you'll be groggy but well rested.

No it's not. Overrated as shite and boring as frick. One of the worst Vietnam War movies ever made.

You want to watch an artful and beautiful Vietnam War movie? Watch Apocalypse Now.

It's good, but it's very heavy. There isn't much "fun" or "entertaining" about it.
