I thought it was funny that it is called the deer hunter, but the deer that is shot isn’t even a deer we have in the US. It was some kind of Russian deer.

Decent movie but way too long. A good 45 minutes could've been left on the cutting room floor no problem.

There are a lot of novels in the Western canon that I want to be able to say that I've read, but that I don't actually want to sit down and read. Deer Hunter is the cinematic equivalent for me in retrospect. Grateful for having watched it but not interested in ever watching it again.

I started to watch it years ago simply because it's supposed to be such a fantastic movie.

Fell asleep and never bothered again.

Interesting replies. I love this movie. I love this movie because when I saw in my early teens it helped me understand my father. Dad was career Army, 3 tours in Vietnam, and worked for the military running troop training. This movie made me realize the effect this war had on the soldiers. All different, all painful, all theirs. I got lucky, Dad’s “desk job” in Vietnam didn’t prevent him from a fulfilling life, but he carried it until his death bed. Anyway, if you ever want to see something that steels your respect for the soldiers that serve, watch it.

Definitely the standard for Vietnam war movies, and you have to watch the full version.

And it’s funny since it’s based on a book set in Africa.

The Deer Hunter is for the type of movie goer who frequents boards like this. That way you can sniff your own farts and post things like how "impactful" and "profound" the movie was while really thinking, "Holy shite, I've enjoyed doing my taxes more than slogging through that borefest" or, "Did Cimino even hire an editor?"

Overrated AF

The hunting scene is particularly awful, shot in the Cascades of Washington over Pennsylvania, De Niro takes a free handed running shot on an Asian red deer

How Hollywood, has always and still does, get hunting scenes so wrong is mind boggling.

I don't know how anyone defends this movie.

It's a masterclass in horrible editing and a rogue director. But it was the 70s and Directors got full control....which the studios realized was a mistake with the amount of money they were bleeding by roles of film dropping on the floor.

Definitely should see it. It’s pretty intense and dark, but a well-made thought provoking movie.”

I'm not defending it. I like the movie. If someone else doesn't, I don't give a shite.

The director definitely put every ounce of creativity and writing skills he possessed into it.

I’m not sure there is a bigger one-hit-wonder filmmaker to ever exist.
