I've never read GL comics, is Hal like this in the comics?

There is a version of Hal Jordan that is like this in the comics, but it would be a travesty for them to jump ahead to that version of Hal Jordan as our introduction to the character in this universe. I guess that isn't completely outside the realm of possibility.

However, that version wouldn't end up shot through the forehead.

You ever met a fighter pilot? Most anybody who's ever flown anything won't hesitate to tell you, but the lawn dart guys are in a league of their own.

I wouldn't have disagreed before the last episode. Cocky, gruff, abrupt; yeah. But you're going to let your pseudo-partner burn alive because you think he's distracted by sex with the enemy?

They have tried to make Hal out to be a villain; however, he seems relatively justified from what is presented to us. He seems a little stuck up, but I could see that making sense considering what he has seen in his life and dealing with the ignorant rest of the population. Hal clearly still comes across like the good guy.
Lanterns are supposed to be fearless. The thought of John replacing Hal scares him that's why his ring is turning more and more yellow as yellow symbolizes fear that is what Sinestro was tapping into when Hal went talk to him. It's why Hal has been acting the way he has and what will turn him into Parralax.

This clearly isn't Parallax. Parallax wouldn't get shot in the head by a bullet.

Also, it would be a major error for our introduction to Hal Jordan to be Parallax, and a huge waste to use Parallax for just one season of TV. This Hal Jordan literally isn't Parallax.

Since the popular shocking character changes of the 70s and 80s, TV and film writers have made the mistake of jumping to the downfall/revamp/tragedy of the characters so that they can get to the "payoff" of the character arc, instead of giving us the long build-up that leads to a true payoff.

They have but it’s the actual evil characters telling you he’s the villain while all he does are heroic things.

I think that the Hal-ogram gives us some insight into how Hal was at a younger age. When Hal interacts with "himself", it's current Hal talking to younger, less jaded Hal.

I agree that’s his function but the show has so much conflicting messaging in it I’m not sure that contrast will be a big reveal. If current Hal were the guy they told us he was instead of the guy we see actually doing right it would be more crucial to the character.

I hope that's not what they're going with here. Would be an absolutely pathetic use and waste of Parallax.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Hal meant for John to die in the accident, he just wanted him to be incapacitated. When he came back to talk to him, I think that was him checking on him to make sure he's okay, while also knowing he wouldn't be able to move at all. The car didn't catch on fire until late when Zoe came.

Still 100% an a-hole move by Hal, but he wasn't trying to actually murder him.

I assumed Zoe burned him so she could heal him and win him to her side?

I'll buy that, but hitting a telephone pole at 60mph could have easily done it as well. He may not have been trying to kill him (he could obviously do that with the ring) but I think he was ok with it as a possible outcome. John's unlikeable enough that it didn't even jump out to me at the time.

I figured it just gave them another chance to mention skin color. It never developed into anything more than that unless he turns up supercharged from the process.

That's probably the biggest hurdle the show needs to overcome.

Hal is world-famous for being a superhero and has decades of experience as a Green Lantern.
-Hal leaves his lantern at home.
-Hal doesn't keep his ring recharged even though he knows a shitstorm is coming.

Hal can use the ring to make anything he can imagine.
-He didn't bother to even try to capture/contain the suicide crew when they confronted him.

The story is about Hal being shoved out by the conniving Guardians.
-The story is about racism.

The manhunter is a menace.
-The manhunter has been peaceful, even beneficent, just wants to be left alone and only acted out of self-defense.

I thought he came across abnormally strong in their fight. I felt he got supercharged in some way.

That's the biggest disconnect for me. Apparently GL fans know how bad Manhunters are, but I don't think the writers do and they definitely didn't bother to convey that to the casual fan. A rural baddie who sorta takes over a town and has a loyal local populace armed with guns is a Reacher novel, not sci-fi.

They make it clear in the last episode that this has been a devil's bargain. How many times does the sheriff have to repeat that she owes Zoe while doing something she doesn't want to do?

To me, this is clear. John, when he was on the phone with his parents, said this exact thing. Something like "I don't think he meant to kill me, but I am not totally sure".

Not ever having read the comics, how long is a charge supposed to last. Seems like he is always running out of power. Wouldn’t just recharge the thing every night?
