When I think "classic" I think of films like Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, The Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, Schindler's List, and the like.
Okay, what about Citizen Kane? Or Blade Runner? Raging Bull? All box office stinkers. Now, all considered classics.
Of course there are classics that did well in the past. But the point is, there were lots of bombs that people didn't appreciate at the time as well.

Hell...It's hard to blame them! We have a thread on this board literally asking which movies we'd like to see REMADE!
My answer? fricking none! Create something original.

This is the way to get clicks, likes and subs on YT today.
There was a watch guy I used to view in the past, he gave solid reviews on a lot of watches there weren't a lot of reviews of. He has maybe 20k subs. Then he went on a rant against a company and got 5x the views he would normally get and now he rants most of the time. His subs grew 8 fold but he just seemed more bitter every day. IMO he is pretty unwatchable now but his subs keep growing.

Between 1962 and 1995 there were.
1. 15 James Bond movies released.
2. 3 Man With No Name Movies released.
3. 3 Godfather movies released
4. 3 Star Wars movies released.
5. 3 Batman movies released.
6. 4 Superman movies released.
7. 6 Halloween movies released.
8. 10 Friday the 13th movies released.
9. 2 Terminator movies released.
10. 2 Home Alone movies released.
11. 3 Back to the Future movies released.
12. 6 Nightmare on Elm Street movies released.
13. 3 Indiana Jones movies released.
14. 3 Alien movies released.
15. 5 Rocky movies released.
16. 7 Star Trek movies released.
17. 4 Jaws movies released.
18. 2 American Graffiti movies released.
19. 3 Smokey and the Bandit movies released.
20. 2 Crocodile Dundee movies released.
21. 2 Three Men and a Baby movies released.
22. 2 Ghostbusters movies released.
23. 3 Rambo movies released.
24. 6 Police Academy movies released.
25. 2 Porky's movies released.
26. 3 Beverly Hills Cop movies released
27. 2 48 Hours movies released.
28. 2 Conan the Barbarian movies released.
29. God knows how many Godzilla movies released.
And a lot of these franchises appeared in the 80s. In fact, if you like sequels, the only other decade beside the 2010s that was riddled with as many sequels was the 1980s.

If you think the movies of the 00s, 10s, and 20s compare favorably to the 70s, 80s, and 90s then I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.
If you think the 70s, 80s, and 90s weren't chock full of forgettable dreck, then you've already purchased that bridge. And that bridge's name is Nostalgia.

There's shite released in every decade. Ed Wood was doing his thing in the 50s. My argument is there are fewer "classic" films being released today than there was two or three decades ago.

Once again...box office intake does not determine quality. I couldn't care less what the film did at the box office.

The latest video essay from the drinker in which he tries to get at the problem with modern filmmaking. He does this by comparing and contrasting the payoff found in the films Tremors (1990) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017).
What a useless fricknozzle comparison to waste time on.
This guy either enjoys being a drink miserable frick at this point or he’s embraced his stupid audience which contains more than a few maga types.

I'm a little confused, but I thought you were the one using "instant classics" as a metric for the state of current cinema.

Well that’s just bullshite.

Only a fool would think they are nearly as good or as original as they were 25-30 years ago.
This is such broad strokes, happy memories thinking, though. The 80s were famous for the collapse of New Hollywood and the rise of the paint-by-numbers blockbuster. The ones people still talk about are a small minority of quality films that were released amongst a landslide of shite.
The same scenario as every decade of movies ever. The 90s gave us QT. The 90s also gave us dozens of garbage QT ripoffs. And QT meets zero qualifications for originality anyway.
There are thousands of movies released every year. We have no idea which ones will be discovered later and remembered longer. Many of the beloved movies of yesteryear were ignored when upon their initial releases. Things that seem like they stick in the moment are often reevaluated.
The people obsessed with the declining quality of movies are almost always the people too busy bitching about movies to actually watch them. Have I seen a legit 10/10 movie from 2021? No, but I haven't had a chance to see everything yet, and I won't for years to come.
And if you don't see originality in movies like Pig, The Green Knight, or Annette, then you're proving that you have no interest in watching easily accessible, high-quality, original films.

I’d like to see a list of poster’s top 10 movies and compare. I think mine would be fairly evenly spread out
What movies from the 21st Century would compare favorably to Apocalypse Now, 2001, Clockwork Orange, JAWS, Blues Brothers, Good Bad & Ugly, The Shining, Animal House, Ghostbusters or JFK?
They've made I don't even know how many Superman movies in the last twenty years. Are any of them comparable to Superman or Superman II? For that matter, we've probably had 100 or so remakes in this century. Are any of them better than the originals? I guess Dark Knight is a little better than Batman, if you want to count that.
There are definitely a few quality streaming shows compared to TV shows from the past, I will grant that.
I'll add that there are a few very good movies still being made, but for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, they don't feel like timeless classics that are worth watching for decades.

I wonder if he has enough self understanding to know that people like him are part of the reason stuff sucks now. This entire era of America is finding the tiniest bit of fault in something, exploding it into the biggest deal ever for either money or self importance, and then bitching that nobody wants to take a risk. It's exhausting to be pissed off all the time.
An obscure youtuber is the reason "stuff sucks now"?

Not nearly as much as he loves to wrap in a sound bite and mini rant about the “virus of unknown origin” into damn near every video he does.

Also it’s pretty stupid to complain about no original movies being made when A24 has been pumping out original classics for the last few years.
Also every single decade has a ratio of 80% shite movies to 25% good to 5% classics. Even in the golden years most movies were bad. Not to disparage older movies or modern movies, it’s just the nature of the beast.

A24 has made some good original content since their inception, but very little of it has entered into the public's collective conscious quite like movies such as Pulp Fiction did.

I knew of Drinker for a while, but man, the more I listen to him, watch some of his live streams ( with AZ, MauLer, Nerdrodic ) the more impressed I am of his knowledge and views.
