The latest video essay from the drinker in which he tries to get at the problem with modern filmmaking. He does this by comparing and contrasting the payoff found in the films Tremors (1990) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017).

If you think the movies of the 00s, 10s, and 20s compare favorably to the 70s, 80s, and 90s then I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

I wonder if he has enough self understanding to know that people like him are part of the reason stuff sucks now. This entire era of America is finding the tiniest bit of fault in something, exploding it into the biggest deal ever for either money or self importance, and then bitching that nobody wants to take a risk. It's exhausting to be pissed off all the time.

I would say that, for as much as there is a cottage industry of terrible media out there, there is also a cottage industry in nitpicking and shitting on everything.

Both groups service each other (perhaps without even knowing it). The first group appreciates the free publicity from the people who compulsively seek things out to shite on. The second group is generally happier indulging in their self-righteous misery at never enjoying anything.

I know. And there are plenty of comic book nerds on this board (particularly MCU fans) who take offense if someone even questions the quality of today's films as compared to yesteryear. Only a fool would think they are nearly as good or as original as they were 25-30 years ago.

If you watch JUST his reviews, that is mainly (but not always) the case. You need to check out The Drinker Recommends and Extra Shots which tend to be much more positive.

As for this one, he's spot on. Setup and payoff and how modern movies (especially modern blockbusters) tend to lack the former at the expense of the latter.

Who is this guy and what makes him special enough to have a thread dedicated to every one of his videos?

Not sure why but watching that makes me really miss Every Frame a Painting video series which tackled themes like this.

Only a fool would think that if the studios then had the opportunities and limitations of today, that they wouldn't have put out endless franchises and remakes and made for streaming films.

You might as well damn Hollywood for no longer making fantastic silent films.

Maybe you should go back and watch some movies from those eras that aren't the classics people still care about. There's a ton of shite films with awful acting, awful stories, awful editing, and awful cinematography.

This is like when people go oh music back in the day was sooooo much better while forgetting crap like Disco Duck and Muskrat Love were big hits.

Quite right. It wasn't all a bed of roses. However, there are two or three times as many in this modern age of filmmaking we have today.

I’d like to see a list of poster’s top 10 movies and compare. I think mine would be fairly evenly spread out

He's right.

Modern filmmaking is just like modern music and most forms of entertainment. It has been winnowed down to just what makes the most money with the least long term investment. It's high on commodity, low on art. That's why guys like JJ Abrams are so big. They bring in shiny crap palatable enough to turn a profit, but ultimately very forgettable.

That's an exaggeration and we cant even know what all from now will be the classics b/c we're in the moment.

A movie like Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a massive bomb when it was released and now is a classic. Meanwhile a movie like Smokey and the Bandit II which was one of the highest grossing flicks of 1980 is flat out painful to watch.

And it's not about "things sure were better in my day". I was born in 70 and feel like there are more films that would fall in my top 100 from before 1970 than there would be after.
