Stormfront had just finished snapping Kimiko's neck, was about to do the same to Starlight (who probably doesn't shake it off like Kimiko does), had fricked up all the non-Supers, tossed the car with MM and Becca like an empty beer can, and was basically fixing to kill everyone. And newsflash, they had no answer. She was taking bullets better than I can handle mosquitoes.
So yeah, I'd say she warranted a good arse-kicking at that moment. And to be totally honest, she was tanking those blows too. If she didn't decide to bail, it's not completely certain that she'd lose. Maeve just upped the ante too much for her to be certain of a W, so she split and went after Becca and the kid. Had she left Becca alone, she probably gets the W overall.

What changed ? I mean, he could have done that any time, how did his situation alter all that much?
Did he just finally snap, now that he feels that he's basically alone ? No future with Stormfront, Maeve's betrayal complete, his kid taken, Becca dead ( not that he cared for her ).
First it was Stilwell, then the guy doing the fake Stilwell (extraordinarily creepy), then Stormfront (of all the people you could ask for) is the one who reels him back in. I mean, she was toxic for sure, be he was actually healthy with her. He could get his kink on and not cause harm, he was quite frankly good with Ryan, and instead of torching Becca he was talking with her about things. He wanted to get his way, but he was trying to explain it too, and the concerns he raised were valid. He basically was saying "I don't want him to become another ME" to her.
That's all been snatched away from him, and it ain't coming back. He has nothing to care about, and no one to care for him anymore. And he's learned that being gentle (with the Ryan/Becca thing) only blew up instead.
Regarding the guns and their ineffectiveness, what else are you going to do? I mean, yeah, it's useless, but we'd all do a mag dump in the same situation. Or pick up a crowbar like Butcher. Better than go fetal and wait for it, might as well take a shot.

Earlier episode, I agree, the Stormfront/Homelander rally had shades of MAGA sprinkled on it.
And Neuman was DEFINITELY AOC with the activist-congresswoman thing going on.
It did get a little uncomfortably blatant at times.
But, that's pivoted bigtime. The Nazi=MAGA thing has dissipated, Homelander is looking good (on TV) and has shown a bit of soul the past couple episodes. He's pyscho, but I feel a bit bad for the dude. He just wanted to watch Davy Crockett, now he just wants to frick and get loved and have a kid. Once he blew a few Super nuts off, he was mellowing out. He was HAPPY. Hell, he even gave Butcher a last chance to walk away and leave him the kid, and with Becca gone technically he has better claim.
As for AOC Lite, instead of the activist hero she's the hidden supervillain, and most likely the pawn of a mega corporation, the swamp in the background running things. That's some cynical shite, and if you're Left leaning it's probably a bit insulting to you, just saying.

Because they haven't waged a full-scale war against non-Communist regimes... yet. Thus far we've had Cold and Soft wars but never the aggression and scale we saw from Germany and Japan.
Also, much of our media loves the money China throws at it. Disney, one of the largest media complexes in the country, is so deeply desirous of pleasing China they've edited worldwide releases of movies to make them more palatable to the political wants of the Chinese government.
