One late night, Adam called me to tell me his plans for a dodge ball scene. He said he was going to actually hit the children with the ball, and he couldn’t stop laughing as he told me how funny it is to hurt a kid in comedy. Instead of telling him he was crazy, I believed him and got the parents’ permission for their kids to get hit genuinely hard. The kids started crying as soon as the ball hit them, so I had to cut away before the audience could see. (Incidentally, E! News was coming by the set that day. I tried to keep them as far away from the dodge ball as possible.)

It’s a professional set. I am sure they tested the kids ability to dodge a wretch before they ever threw live dodgeballs at them

He's a hero to other people in the business that have/had to deal with child actors.

They are little shits

I rewatched that scene and there is nothing funnier than a grown man destroying kids with a dodgeball

spare me this sanctimonious crap. those kids had the time of their lives and might just have learned a thing or two along the way

Yea, it was totes the time of their lives to have an adult peg them so hard w/a ball they cried.

It's a soft rubber ball.

We use to play Dodgeball with a soccer ball...now that could leave a mark.

and he was throwing it hard enough to make them cry.

not sure why you think those things aren't going to hurt when an adult is throwing it full force at an 8 year old.

they even admit it was bad enough that they were scared for an E! reporter to even watch was happening.

the parents actually got mad at him by his own admission

quote:

Though Sandler says he approached the scene with a sense of humor, the children’s parents weren’t as happy with his performance.

“The parents come up to me and they’re like, ‘That’s a kid. You nailed that kid!’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. That’s the scene!'” he remembered. “I said, ‘Didn’t they read the script?’ and they go, ‘They’re six, they don’t read yet.'”

It's not like I'm saying he is a total POS and I'll never watch anything of his again. That doesn't change that it was a shitty thing to do to kids that age.

I guarantee that everyone of those kids from that scene show off that that’s them every single time and love it. No pain no gain. Little turds probably deserved it too

I don't always care for his movies, but Sandler seems like a genuinely good dude. Who knows though.

Ok, sure. Sorry a scene from a movie you like was actually adults being assholes to little kids who didn't realize what was going to happen.

They gave Judy Garland on Oz amphetamine uppers to keep her perky and alert all day and then barbituates to bring her down when she was 15. And given what we now know about Hollywood she was probably passed around the lot and abused.

I don't think being hit once in the face by a bouncey red ball is that big of deal.
