While i totally agree. Who knows how physics works in that universe.
The oil could have been some crazy hot burning chemical.
The fire on the outside of the ship bothered me more.
You can have fire in a vacuum but it will be blue and almost invisible and needs oxidizer.

I think he was suffering long term effects from mind control.
