What are the general thoughts? I’ve been holding off as the commercials didn’t look great to me but I enjoy the dc universe

I legitimately enjoyed it, as did my wife. If you want to hate it, you’ll hate it… but if you go in just wanting to see a fun movie, it’s definitely that.

Someone asked a question. I answered it. Why does that bother you so damn much?

I hate to tell you this, but every single filmmaker puts part of themselves in their films. I hope you can recover from this devastation

Oh I didn’t realize you were answering his question because you replied to me. But sure.

Now, is there anything else? Because yes I will admit this is annoying. We know you hate Gunn and everything he stands for and does. We know you aren’t going to see the movie. We know you think the DC is in peril and will fall even farther to its death with Gunn at the helm. We know.

But the reception for this movie is very good overall. You can agree with that or not. We don’t care. Does that mean everyone loves everything about it? No.

If you have anything else to say, you’re basically outing yourself as a troll (if you haven’t already). We know your position. Some may agree, some may not. But stop making yourself look like the crazy homeless guy at the corner holding a sign. For your own sake. But mostly because you’re annoying tf out of everybody.

And thank you Gunn for being overly honest about it (sarcasm). Because now we have to deal with this crazy guy.

Not to this extent. Not even close.

I'm glad you have someone to simp for ,but just seems odd you'd do it for James Gunn. Oh well.

No, I cut & copied YOUR query, which was a response to fatkid's asking what all the fuss was about, or near enough.

YOU said you didn't know how JG inserted himself into the movie.

I told you.

This has become far too tedious.

(He also appears on a DC comic book variant cover. Again, proving it's as much about James Gunn as it is Superman.)

That must mean he cares a shite ton about Superman. Sounds good to me.

No, it's the exact opposite. He doesn't care, doesn't know, and it shows in the movie. JG isn't about "America" in a positive light. There's no 'Truth, Justice and the American way' line to be found in the movie. (Feel free to correct me and point out where, if it's there.)

Gunn had 'trouble' figuring out the code, HIS WORDS, not mine.

How many times are you going to repeat the same things?

WE KNOW. Pretty impressive of him to make a movie so well received in hindsight. I’m more impressed with Gunn now.

You're easy to impress, I suppose.

Superman isn't that hard to figure out. Nearly a 90 yr old character, not new. Been done many many times over.

If he's trying to say he's looking to do a different Superman, then say that. But he says he had trouble connecting with the basic concept. Why? Dunno. Most fans, even casual ones, would at least hit on the major points of what makes him who he is.

But go see it 2,3,5 times.

And so is the majority of the country I guess. Oh well.

Dude are you really this obsessed? Do you see yourself? I’ve never seen someone so obsessed about a director and what they do or don’t say.

This has been true of every Superman filmmaker and film.

Superman 78 had a million writers turn it into a series of episodes that Superman only appears in the last hour of. Superman II was a shitshow production (made simultaneously with the first one) where Donner and his writers couldn't land on a tone nor figure out how to make the narrative different from the first one. They repeat the spinning the globe backwards bit in both the Donner and the Lester versions.

Lester thought Superman needed more comedy and zaniness. I never saw Superman Quest for Peace, but supposedly Reeve made it, or would only agree to make it, specifically to be a political message movie about nuclear disarmament.

Bryan Singer couldn't figure out anything to do besides ape the style of Donner, but couldn't otherwise figure out what to do with any of the characters. Snyder decided Superman's violence should be the centerpiece of the film, basically pissing off everyone who's ever enjoyed any other Superman content, and he, also neglected to do anything with the actual characters. Everyone is a trope who commits the Campell-appropriate actions right on cue. Does his dad need to die in the situation he finds himself in? Absolutely not, but we need the mentor character to die for our hero to grow. Snyder might be the only filmmaker here who didn't realize he hadn't successfully "cracked the code."

Gunn saying he had trouble is him admitting publicly what every other superman filmmaking team went through. His success or lack thereof is debatable. Using this as proof that he was the wrong guy for the job is silly.

This Superman is more Boy Scout than any Superman that has ever existed on film. He saves a squirrel ffs. Gunn knew he had to do that. People have a view of Superman and they get pissed when it sways at all. Some people even had some complaints that Superman was a little too emotional in this movie. There’s always something.

Where Gunn had more freedom is the characters around Superman. It’s how he was able to get more balance in the movie. He didn’t have to make his only superhero a guy who saves squirrels. There’s variety. Personally I LOVE Guy Gardner. This is where Gunn injected himself more. These characters around Superman. But Superman is Superman. As much as he possibly could be without making him a robot.
