But yeah, the old superman motto is a product of wwii propaganda for children in the 40s. That's fine.

You mad, bro?

Anyone who thinks his foreign-born patriotism is the core essence of Superman is probably not a very serious adult, and is more likely just trying to signal his virtue online.

This motto has also changed several times since the 60s.

The progressives love "A Better Tomorrow" much better than "The American Way." Ignoring the fact that without the latter, you almost certainly don't get the former.

Say mad, bro.

I love the motto and if I ever got a tattoo it would be an image of Wonder Woman with the word "Truth" next to her, Batman with "Justice", and Superman with "and the American Way".

But unfortunately the perceptions of truth, of justice, and of the American way differ from person to person. Just as "Christian" and "Patriot" have lost their definitive meanings (if they ever had one).

Apparently a lot of the side characters don’t play a big part in the movie

Well there are a ton of side characters and villains.

James Gunn apparently cracked the Superman code by…watching Bollywood movies?

Ummm, ok.

I'm one of the few who thought GotG was crap so never had high hopes for Gunn's impact on DC and Supes.

The American way line is not about jingoistic patriotism, but about the ideals of freedom and justice that the US represented to the culture of the golden age of comics. I would say that those ideals are exactly the core essence of the character. The modern day take that America is a deeply flawed country that could never represent those ideals is an argument many make, but one that is not likely to resonate well with a movie going audience that Superman is made for.

Long established as an allegory for the immigrant experience, especially when viewed through the personal histories of Superman‘s comic book co-creators — second-generation Jewish immigrants Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster — DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said his forthcoming film entry of Kal-El keeps in tune with the original 1938-created vision.

“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” the Superman helmer told The Times U.K. in a new profile. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

When asked how the blockbuster may be perceived in predominantly red versus blue states, especially amid prevailing anti-immigrant and refugee sentiment, Gunn responded, “Yes, it plays differently, but it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”

“Yes, it’s about politics,” Gunn said of his take. “But on another level it’s about morality. Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois believes? It’s really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart.”

I was told it was racist to uphold the "model minority" ideal

And if Superman isn't exactly that, then there is no such thing

Why would Cavill matter? I don't have any issues with corenswet. My concern is the cgi and all the other superheroes being added.

He wouldn't

The problem is that we have people making movies about characters they don't understand.

They just can't help themselves. Same mistake over and over. Think I'll save some money and just watch the 1st and 2nd Reeves movies instead. At least I know they're going to be good. The only question is should I watch the theatrical versions or Donner cut.

For one who hadn't read the source material, I thought it was a decent enough movie. Well done, in fact. Can't say the same for the sequels.

The Daily Beast says Superman is terrible

Never in my life would I miss this kind of movie in a theater, but if the reviews suck I might sit this one out and stream it later. It’s just gotten too expensive to go to the theater for a mediocre film - and I have to have my popcorn and Coke. I was disappointed with the new Jurassic World movie and wasn’t wild about F1.

Cavill was the best Superman past and future. They won’t find a better one, and this new guy ain’t it. People will see the trailer and say “that guy doesn’t look like Superman” and they’re right
