I don’t think anybody disagrees with you. Yeah, it is a disappointment financially. But more movies are coming anyway. So relax

it's falling off a cliff in Asia and Europe

Why is this? Do they not like Superman or something? Superhero fatigue? Government pressure? No dinosaurs?

I'm not sure why Europe doesn't seem to care about it, but Superman doesn't appear to be popular in Asia. It's fallen behind F1 in several Asian markets. It just came and went over there.

Government pressure/propaganda, maybe. Something changed since Man of Steel because it made $63mm

And they like water-based stories for the most part. Kaijus (maybe why they put one in Superman)

Guardians III did well there in 2023 ($87mm) though it was galactic. I don’t think superheroes are dead there, just need the right visuals

It’s not complicated. Superman is quintessentially American, and most of the world hates us.

This, unsurprisingly Capt. America also had these issues, which it why it was called simply, The First Avenger in overseas markets.

Yes, it is that. But we’re even more in a bad situation with Superman worldwide. Man of steel did way better worldwide than this will. It’s more than just a Superman is American thing now. It’s the current world climate. It’s worse than it was before. And you also have superhero fatigue overall worldwide.

Actuals at 125, as I suspected. A 2.6 multiplier gets it to 325, domestic. 2.8 gets it 350. Excellent legs, anything at or above 3.0 gets it to 375. It needs 2.8 or more to have any shot at 600 worldwide.

The more I think about it, the more I'm certain that Zaslav is going to step in and force Gunn and Reeves to combine their films. These Superman numbers are not good enough to justify paying for 2 separate universes. It just doesn't make sense to give Reeves 150+ million for his film and another 150+ to Gunn for his. Superman looks like it'll be lucky to break even.

The most important thing this movie can do is give peopel faith in the DCU again and it seems to be doing that. Break even is still a win if the vast majority of people who see it like it and keep up the positive word of mouth.

It's not unlike Mission Impossible 3 having to repair the damage done by MI2. It wasn't actually a huge success financially but the people who saw it liked it well enough that when they made 4 public perception had completely changed and the franchise became massive.

Saw it with my son and I enjoyed it. I think the switch to having Superman be a creation of the Kents is spot on. Superman is who he is specifically because was raised on a farm in middle America; not becuase of his biological parents. I think some of it was a bit MCU humor which is just getting tired at this point.

this isnt a switch. it's always been why he is who he is.

As an example, China doesn’t share box office returns. They pay an exhibition fee, they keep the box office.

Yes. It’s a huge success even if it breaks even because it resurrected the brand. Even though they’re obviously disappointed by the foreign box office.

Why the World Needs Superman

Is James Gunn's new feature the best Man of Steel movie ever? Maybe not. But it's the Superman we could all really use right now. Plus, THR ranks the rest.

Yeah, what people (RLDSC) fail to realize is, box office is a tip of the iceberg for revenue for a superman movie. this being a positive movie and a "success" in the eyes of audiences means merchandising will be huge for them.

Plus, I bet it will do gangbusters on VOD, streaming, etc. and its sets up the new DC universe. You know if David Corenswet isn't in Supergirl, he will shoot a cameo ASAP and they're going to stick it in the trailers.
