On THIS one? You need to suspend your belief for the entire show; but this is a plot point the writers should have figured out. For example, maybe the blast could have opened a rift that teleported him to Russia or something. I think pretty much any explanation would have been better than, "the Russians snuck out of the mall after US forces already infiltrated it and had it fully surrounded." That's just sloppy writing.

And on a different subject, with such a heavy focus on DND, I imagine they're setting up 001, 008, and 011 to come together to defeat the Mind Flayer next season since 1 + 8 + 11 = 20 and that's a perfect roll in DND.

Got the start of a theory working here.
Spoilers.
Opening scene. Episode 1. El writing the letter to mike. She says some along the lines of
“We can speed up or slow down time just with our emotions and feelings.”
Fast forward. When the gang is in the upside down at the Wheelers house. Her guns aren’t there because it’s the past. It’s the day Will was snatched up by the demogorgen.
I think Vecna is controlling time some kind of way in the upside down and it ties in and is summarized by what El wrote in her letter.
I mean all his victims are going through highly emotional ish you know?

After watching this season I think it’s the best one so far. I loved it.
But I also wanna say, if they decide to kill off any characters I hope Will is the first to go. He’s so annoying and whiny.

Yeah idk if it will play a factor this season but the Upside Down being stuck in 1983 will be something important since they made such a big deal about it in an otherwise pretty hectic episode

tbh this is not the most far fetched theory. Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. I mean it would be pretty lame writing and I think they’re better than that, but I could see it. Maybe it’s just a good fan theory.
On another note - I totally missed a lot of what y’all are saying about 001 being 011’s father, but that would definitely make sense. I’m still not here how it all ties together with the Mind Flayer, though, or why 001/Vecna is obsessed with tormenting emotionally distressed teens.

Yeah, I’m confused on a few things. I thought the MF was dead? And why was 001 basically a helper/prisoner? If he was that powerful and evil why have him around?

Finished episode 2. Poor Fred should have watched more horror movies. Don't ever go into the woods when a crazed killer is about.
