Mind flayer’s “proxy” died in the mall. Either it or something is still in the upside down. If vecna is the general, that other entity is the commander in chief.

Maybe Joel Osteen Jr. is onto something and it’s all the devil

The upside down was always there.

El sent 001 to it in 1979 where he was transformed slowly into Vecna. There will be some omnipotent evil being in Season 5 to deal with.

This season is great so far. Episode 4 was a amazing. I thought for sure max was dead in the slow motion run. The song was perfect for the ending. Only 3 episodes left.

Can we safely assume because Dustin, who’s shown to be smart and generally right, suggested this is how Vecna/Mind Flayer are related that’s he’s right?

It seemed to me the Upside Down was a pretty incorporeal void with just a storm when 001 was thrown into it by El. It didn’t yet have the structure that we now see. I wonder if it’s not the other way around, where Vecna is really the mastermind. Or maybe neither him nor the Mind Flayer are, they’re both generals of a bigger bad.

I suppose we’ll find out in a few weeks. Episode 7 was one of the best episodes in the whole series and I can’t wait for the follow up.

Taking my sweet time with this season. Just finished Ep 4. Nicely done how things you thought were gonna happen didn't, both good and bad.

I get how things needed to happen for the show, but after a couple of cringe worthy set ups, this is really coming together.

why 001/Vecna is obsessed with tormenting emotionally distressed teens

They said it was because those teens had done something bad or evil or had some fault

Crissy - ? her official character description: “Beneath the seemingly perfect surface lies a dark secret.”
Fred - killed someone or didn't help, got scarred on his face
Basketball player - ?
Nancy - Barb
Max - Billy

I think the actor that played the basketball star Jason Carver did a great job.

Yeah, saying people were dying because of a devil worshipering cult was dumb, but from his perspective his friend was floating in the air and turned into a human pretzel

Already said, and I agree, the Eddie actor was very good too. He got the cool, bad kid role, and was on the side of the main characters.

The 10-15 minute breakdown and flashbacks of 001 and 011’s conversation was just incredible. And perfectly including snippets of Nancy seeing the timeline.

So well done. I can’t get over that last episode. I’m so exited for the next 2!!

Damn them for making us wait

I like how the concept of the upside down has that David Lynch Twin Peaks feel with the Black Lodge. Also reminds me of Murakami’s Wind up bird chronicles where the bird cries whenever something evil is about to happen.

Twin Peaks was heavily influenced by the occult, especially Aleister Crowley's Moonchild in which the idea of the Black Lodge is created, and Scientology influencer Jack Parsons (both of those are fun rabbit holes). Stranger Things takes a nod towards that definitely, but not like Twin Peaks did.

I played D&D around the same age in the same time period as the show characters, and they are nailing the vibe of the time and the lore of the game (the Eye and Hand of Vecna were powerful mysterious magical items whose lore wasn't fleshed out early on), although there are some anachronisms.

I really enjoy the show and loved the 80s action movie feel of Hopper and Enzo in Kamchatka during the Soviet Era.

Wtf? How exactly are you getting a Black Lodge feel from the upside down!?

Fred - killed someone or didn't help, got scarred on his face - yea, killed someone in a wreck or caused it - burning car upside down
Basketball player - ? possibly also being abused - Didn't Lucas as something about it?
Nancy - Barb
Max - Billy

I have a feeling it will have something to do with the Upside Down being stuck in 1983. Like I don’t think it will have anything to do with One or Mind Flayer creating it but rather once a portal is opened in a particular city, the snapshot of that city in whatever time period it was opened, is now recreated inside the Upside Down.

Another thing they do very well is setup.

Bald Eagle can in no way fight the Russians, but they set it up right.
I remembered thinking, why is this guy in a karate robe on the phone. Then by the time he's kicking arse, I'm like sure, why the hell not.

Many examples, the map layouts, picture sketches, 001.

More I look at it, the more I become convinced Vecna created the mind flayer, not the other way around. Biggest tip off is that the mind flayer in seasons 2 and 3 took the shape of a spider and had a psychic/telekinetic hold.

My assumption is that the demagorgons, demabats, etc all populated the upside down and Vecna tapped into the hive mind. It’s all been about getting revenge on 11, Hawkins, and humanity ever since.

This is my theory as well though it’s kind of a lame resolution to the plot
