Tbh political agenda that gay people exist.
Wild stuff.
Will being gay has added an interesting dynamic and fleshed out his character. The scene in the Van this season was moving.

See, this is how it continues. Absolutely no one said they had an issue with gay people existing. You choose to deliberately mischaracterize the actual issue.
Let me explain, when you have to add in characters, scenes, side stories, etc. Just make sure the audience knows your character is gay because GLAAD will burn down your studio if you don't, that's a problem for people who want a good overall story.

Fleshed out his character how? No one even knows if he's officially gay yet. What purpose does him being gay serve to the story? Can there not be such a thing as good friends without it becoming a gay thing like the LGBTQ activists portray Frodo and Sam in LOTR?

Oh for fricks sake go back to PT with your whiny bullshite. Can we just get back on topic and actually discuss the show?

Will is queer as a 3 dollar bill. This shouldn't be surprising. His favorite food is obviously hot dogs.

Eddie was a fantastic character honestly thought they were going to kill off Steve and have Eddie be the new babysitter given his relationship with the boys especially Dustin.

You don’t think his character dealing with being gay in a small town in the 80s effects how he feels and acts?

Idk what purpose did Lucas and Max kissing serve the story? Would he not have wanted to save her this season if theh weren’t dating? What purpose has Johnathan and a Nancy hooking up served? Theh we’re investigating Will missing before they started dating.
The only romantic relationships that effect the plot so far is Mike and 11 and Dustin and Suzy because she’s a McGuffin.
But having these romanctic subplots are interesting. They give the characters different motivations and round them out into people not just bodies going through a plot.

Just to move this discussion along...I think the Eddie and Dustin friendship was probably among best aspects of the entire series. Just a trouble misunderstood teen with a heart of gold.
Eddie was such a great character.
It kind of makes me upset they ended him. I wish they'd introduced him in season 2/3.

Yeah my wife was pissed Eddie died
I think he would have been fun going forward too, but they did telegraph it.
Talked about running away too many times

He lives in big city California now, not Hawkins. Are you watching the show? And the implication that small towns are bigoted is what I'm talking about. Generally all of America in the 80s was uncomfortable with gay people.

These are 2 main characters that heavily interacted BEFORE anything romantic. Again, 2 main characters.

Yeah, it's possible everything would be fine without the kiss.

Did we see that on screen? And they're also both main/strong supporting characters. They didn't do anything until they were established in season 1.

You answered your own question. The story allowed their relationship to exist. Same as Max and Lucas. It was earned before any romantic tension.
quote:

Main characters and established before romance.

Dustin and Suzy because she’s a McGuffin.
At least Suzy is there for a plot purpose and not for check box reasons.

I don't disagree with you...when they're earned.
quote:

And I'm not asking for them to just be bodies. So we're not totally apart.
Sorry they couldn't make 2 main characters gay after spending a lot of platonic scenes together?

Eddie sucked
I was hoping he would die and was so glad that they killed him off
Best part of this entire season

You have switched your standard from “what does that do for the story” to “the story allows that to exists”
Do they advance the plot?
Also how is Will coming out not “earned?” He was a pretty young kid when the show started and it’s not like he comes
Out at 11. It’s definitely as earned as anything.

The last two episodes were just OK to me. I wish episode 7 would have been season finale and then pick up from there. I still enjoyed.

quote:I've just said upthread that I like the show despite it. I've said that about other shows and movie as well, like Fury Road. I'm not even the one who started the argument here. The problem is when companies disregard quality altogether in favor of their political agenda.
Then why do you all even bother watching this stuff if it bothers you so much?
quote:
Or that Netflix/Amazon/Disney has an agenda that is ruining every show.
But again, at least Stranger Things bothered to provide a good show. That hasn't been the case very often lately.
Also, Nancy needs to quit that dude and eat a sandwich.

That's not a switch, given Wills story up to this point it provides nothing.
He had no father to speak of, he was kidnapped by a monster when he was 11, and then he had to move across the country away from his best friends. He has enough reasons to be an interesting character that don't require a sexual orientation diagnosis or expression.
quote:
Also how is Will coming out not “earned?”
He hasn't come out yet, has he? As far as I can tell they've really changed his dialogue to imply it.

The show has never needed a sexual orientation declaration from Will. It was well established he was friends with Mike, best friends in fact. Then he had issues with his friends dating and stuff where it showed him having an outburst, a common theme among young adolescents (universally relatable). It only seem in this season that he's really being pushed towards gay.

I wish we could talk forever about gay characters. Really it's the best part of the thread.
- no one, ever

It is.
One standard is whether it does anything for the story and then you switch to “is it earned”
And clearly it effects Will’s relationships with other characters.

He isn’t out but it’s not out of the blue.
In season 1 Joyce tells Hopper "He's a sensitive kid...Lonnie [Will's father] used to say he was queer, called him a fig."
I think at some point Joyce even says something along the lines of “I know what he is” when it’s alluded to that he’s gay.
In season 3 Mike hits him with a “ It's not my fault you don't like girls”
This isn’t out of nowhere.and I think It ads as much to the show as any unrequited
Love story.
