This is 1000% Hollywood's diss because of their deranged idea that Colbert was 'fired' for some imaginary free speech reasons which were never at all the issue. They think this'll be a dig at conservatives and Trump, which is 90 % of what drives current day projects.
Oh yeah, of course they were plotting this revenge against Trump 4 years before he was even elected the first time
quote:
When Colbert visited the New Zealand set of “The Hobbit,” Jackson arranged a trivia face-off between his guest and the film’s resident Tolkien authority Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and won an Academy Award for “The Return of the King.” Colbert won.
“I have never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life. His encyclopedic knowledge of Tolkien is spectacular, and points to a deprived childhood in some respects,” Jackson told Entertainment Weekly in 2012. That “deprived childhood” included, by Colbert’s own account, abandoning schoolwork, quitting sports and spending his teenage years absorbed in not just “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings,” but the full sweep of Tolkien’s writing. Now the man who beat the franchise’s own screenwriter at her own game is writing the next film alongside her.

Forget it, he's on a roll...

Doesn't matter how much of a geek he is, he's still not qualified to WRITE anything Tolkien.
Rings of Power showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay TALKED about how important Elvish languages were to their love of Tolkien, but guess what? The show SUCKED!

As a part of exposure therapy for the horrible PTSD they would all probably have

They aren't writing Tolkien.
They are adapting Chapters 3-8 from Fellowship
quote:
A new Lord of the Rings film project, announced in March 2026 as Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, is set to adapt chapters 3-8 of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring. This section of the book was famously omitted or heavily condensed in Peter Jackson's original film trilogy.
quote:
"Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo — Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began."
Before it even began = chapters 3-8, when they first left the shire.
The chick writing it has already adapted the entire lord of the rings trilogy when she screenwrote for the other movies. Why do you think they are unqualified to adapt chapters 3-8?

This is weak cope. Tolkien WROTE those chapters. There's nothing to adapt.
And I said Colbert isn't fit to write anything. Because he isn't.

I will only accept this if the hobbits are NOT recast. I want Sean Astin and company. And much less CGI than the Hobbit trilogy

I dont think Colbert will make it political.
It may not reach The Boys level of political hackery, but the villains will be MAGA inspired.

Add another beloved IP to the deceased list.

This isn’t Star Trek, where they’re going 100’s of years ahead and making garbage high priced fan fic, but they’re actually trying to amend established lore, of what has already been written.
Why not make an effort to explore the other lands Tolkien didn’t write about? Focus on Harad? Rings of power had every opportunity to do this and yet chose not to. And yet to hear they are again, reaching back to the same old characters. Because in their minds, it’s safe, and the Normie’s will eat it up because they recognize and know these characters already.

Fine if he is, but the guy lives his life being something he isn’t and now all of a sudden, he’s a Tolkien fan?
Why? He's been talking about Lord of the Rings on TV since The Colbert Report. Almost 20 years is "all of a sudden"?

Because they have to mutilate and destroy cultural touchstones. It’s meant to be decisive.

Point to wear on his IMDb profile where it says he’s remotely qualified to help write a Lord of the Rings movie.
Or any movie.
And big deal if he has been yapping about Lord of the Rings after the Peter Jackson movies came out.
How many Oscars did those win? Nothing about Colbert suggests he understands the heart of the story or the author

I'm not defending this decision or idea. I said in my first post that it will probably suck if it ever actually exists, which i doubt.
You said you don't believe he's a fan. You've clearly said that because you don't like him, and that's clearly dumb. Two opposing things can both be dumb.

I don’t like him, correct. Never did buy his dumb arse conservative act, and this was long before current day.
Posted on 3/25/26 at 9:30 pm to Jay Are
read slowly because apparently you’re not following very well. You can’t make a faithful adaptation of the movie AND the books when Peter Jackson clearly took minor, creative license, namely at Weathertop. If you know, you know.

I am curious.
Where does this confidence that a man, whose entire being is wrapped around overt partisan political hackery, will choose now to be completely neutral to a work he is co-writing?
I feel like this is akin to thinking SEK could write a film review and you being supremely confident he will not inject his personal politics.
