Marvel. And I’m a DC guy. Marvel has Kirby and Ditko as its foundation.

Star Wars is a secondary universe built from the pieces of other franchises. And the longer it goes on the more it is hit and miss.

LOTR has been stretched out and diluted with the expansion of the film series.

Star Wars killed itself and only two of the movies have been truly great. Seriously there hasn’t been a great Star Wars movie in my lifetime. I can judge it for that.

Jedi was good. Who cares if great. Honestly a lot of ppl rather Jedi over Empire. I know crazy, but just because it's refined.

I'm honestly tired. Tired of listing reasons why Star Wars's universe is great (I don't count the new ones) and how terrible the MCU is for film making.

Edt: 2018 sucked the life is it of me.

I thoroughly believe that kids today will be thoroughly confused with our obsession with Star Wars when Marvel has been so much consistently better.

IDK man, my son and all his buddies (12-13yr olds) freaking love star wars.

I grew up a DC guy just because of the awesome animated Batman series during my childhood.

So guess a Batman guy but I hate Batman, the villains make Batman.

Return of the King was great though. The Battle at the Black Gate when Frodo and Sam are fighting Gollum was more intense than anything in Jedi.

The Star Wars universe is great and I think better than Middle Eartg. We just have a bunch of stupid hacks managing it now.

Same here.

Everyone's kids seem to prefer Star Wars.

I’m really talking about 8 and under. I think 13 year olds can process it given that Marvel wasn’t completely saturated 5 years ago.

I can't tell you how much it killed me.

Glad we had some awesome novels this year.

Thrawn saved Star Wars for me. My fandom is still Dead but at less I'm not sick to my stomach when thinking about the franchise.

I’m willing to bet Kathleen Kennedy could not tell me who Thrawn is. That’s the direction I want the Star Wars universe to go in.

People won't like it, but it's true.

Yeah LOTR and Star Wars were great, but the MCU has done something no movie universe has even come close to. We are going on nearly 11 years 22 movies which will end it's first major arc with Endgame.

It worked so well it caused DC to try and start their own even though they have had a rough start

You can’t do that when you are discussing which series is better.

4 Years ago the answer was probably Star Wars by a long ways, but it isn't so clear now.

All three bring something different to the table. All 3 almost require you to forget a few duds.

Star Wars and LOTR now have people just sucking them dry. Marvel still has Feige. So right now, the answer is probably Marvel. If Abrams takes over and reinvents Star Wars, it could grab it back. LOTR doesn't have enough now to probably ever take the top spot, however, if you limit each franchise down to it's very best - LOTR is king easily.

There's a magic in Star Wars, honestly, that neither other series could grab. LOTR is too dark. Marvel is too light. SW is just right.

The correct, undisputed, inarguablee, factual answer is as follows:

Star Wars OT is tGOAT
LOTR (no hobbit) is a close second.

Marvel isn't in the same league. I love me some marvel movies, but no marvel movie comes close to Empire much less ANH or Fellowship . Although Infinity War did its best.

You can’t pick and choose which movies are part of a series.

LOTR gets the shitty Hobbit trilogy.

Marvel gets its bad movies, honestly though, the bad are more just vanilla and boring than “bad”.

SW gets the prequels and TLJ.

Even if you WERE only comparing the best of the best, I think SW vs LotR is a battle of genre preference more than anything. They set the standard for what people expected from each to come while also making each genre mainstream.

But as you say, we’re comparing complete works so I’m going with LotR.

Star Wars should get a little credit for being original. The other franchises are adaptations of other works that are arguably superior to the movie versions.

I'll give you that Star Wars is technically an original work but the story arc itself is far from that. It's a classic tale, told throughout literature's history and it could be said it was grratly influenced by LOTR.

The hero's journey, plucked from obscurity to end a great evil, the wise old sage who dies in the first film, then comes back in another form to mentor, mystic powers, etc.

The originality in Star Wars came from Lucas' world creation and visual and audio effects the likes of which had never been seen.

Just watch other science fiction movies from the mid-late 70s like Logan Run just 1 year before and compare, it's night and day between them.

They are the same genre, just different setting.

SW is high fantasy, as is LOTR

It certainly isn’t Star Wars. A majority of those movies have been average at best, if not downright poor.

All true, but I was 7 years old in 1977 and Star Wars was a huge part of my childhood. I was maybe 10 when one of my drunken uncles pointed out the recurring mythological themes and characters and what I later came to recognize as Campbell's monomyth. Myth and folklore and the glimpses of larger truths hidden in them have been a great interest of mine ever since.
