Now moving on to the other two. Star Wars consists of only two great films: the first two. The third one save for the throne room scenes is not that good.

Looking back with an adult's eye this is undeniably true but in 1983 Luke was finally a badass, Princess Leia was half-naked and on a leash. Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far, away, a fat man knew his audience.

I thought the very worst sin of TLJ was the way Luke tossing his lightsaber away a second time really diminishes the scene in Return. Never. I am a Jedi, as my father was before me.

And where do I find that Hobbit fan edit you speak of?

For the purposes of this discussion, I am limiting SW and LOTR to the "original" trilogies. Marvel is difficult because if you look at JUST the Avenger films, it is a distant 3rd to the other 2. The same if you take their individual character series (although, the Captain America triolgy is pretty damned solid).

Anyway, this is really tough for me because I was "there" for the original SW, seeing New Hope (just "Star Wars" then) over 10 times in the theater, but have been a fan of the Tolkien universe since right around when SW was released.

Regardless, it's damned close, but because LOTR did such a fantastic job capturing what had been in my mind's eye since I first read it, and did it without missing a beat for three movies, it gets the nod.

The other two have misses (Ewoks, Ultron), they don't measure up.

The prequels and TLJ should eliminate Star Wars from this discussion.

I think LoTR were much better films, but I find the Marvel movies more rewatchable

ETA: I only included the LoTR trilogy not the Hobbit. I have still never watched it.

Having seen your opinions, I’d have been way more concerned if you’d said you liked me as a poster.

The Hobbit is undeniably a fricking mess, and I actually dislike the Battle of the Five Armies (only two or maybe 3 scenes are worth a damn), but it’s more due to a bunch of shitty executive producers and money grabbing studios where all of its problems lie. The Battle of the Five Armies did not have enough material for a 2.5 hour long movie. You could really do it in a half hour.

If you can’t find the fan edit (I have it downloaded but don’t know exactly where to find it online), do look behind the scenes on this movie. It really is a fascinating behind the scenes look that is very honest about the films, unlike say the behind the scenes for the more recent Star Wars movies, which are completely full of shite and filled with blatant lies. I do think it makes you forgive Jackson a bit for the Hobbit trilogy when you know what he was up against.

Do we get to count the tv shows and books? Or just movies?

The Clone Wars cartoon is the best thing out of all three franchises though.

Then you have to throw in Tolkien's novels and Kirby's Fantastic Four and Ditko's Spider-Man and Star Wars still falls short.

Yeah, books can’t be allowed in this, but I think the tv shows should be allowed.

Prefer? Lord of the Rings. By a long shot. That is the best trilogy of all time for me and it's not even close. If you can take all three parts of LotR as one movie, then I would call it my #1 movie of all time.

Star Wars is great, and massively entertaining. And Marvel is the same (although there are a good bit of Marvel movies that are just meh for me). But the breadth of Marvel lends itself to rewatchability since there are just so many movies and they all tie in so nicely. And Infinity Wars was just about perfect in bringing them all together cohesively.

The Hobbit was just okay. But it doesn't hurt the LotR trilogy IMO. So while all three franchises are great, give me LotR overall.

Agreed.

I certainly wouldn't argue with someone who was around for Star Wars in the 70s/80s and what an experience that must have been.

I can appreciate what Marvel has done over the last 10+ years and building that universe that intertwines so well and generally the quality of each movie is good but the individual movies to me do not stand up 1on1 vs LOTR.

Not even close. LotR top to bottom was better than anything in the SW-verse.

I hope and think you are joking.

Thrawn, the unknown regions and the other 7-9 galaxies keep me reading Star Wars.

Star Wars is so much more boring than Marvel. They basically fight the same villain(s) every film which is the Empire or something related.

Marvel on the other hand, they fight corrupt govt, mutants, otherworldly forces, supernatural, super spies etc so they mix it up.

Star Wars has other major villains I think so it is a shame they went with this FIRST ORDER bullshite in the new trilogy.

So are we including the hobbit in the LOTR discussion?

If so, you have 3 fantastic movies, one good one, and 2 absolutely horrendous movies. People can argue that Jackson "got the scenes that he needed to right" until the cows come home, well we got about 5 hours worth of film wrong.

Not even counting the story, the cgi was way overused and looked like crap. The lack of cgi was one of the reasons lotr was far superior. I mean the dwarves didn't even look like dwarves. They dumbed it down so the audience didn't have to think they were watching dwarves the entire time so they made them look pretty much like men. Such a cop-out.
