Say what you will about the new Abrams-Johnson-Abrams Triology with their unlikable characters, lazy re-hashed storylines/plot-holes, and abominable "subverted expectations"...

...but they are gorgeous movies.

Just came out of TROS, and I couldn't tell what was CGI and what was practical. The ships, locations, creatures, etc looked other-worldly but astoundingly real. I was transported.

Went tonight with my sons and super low expectations (I’ve followed the spoilers). Well, dang, I really enjoy it and thought they wrapped up the story nicely!

$11M FRI for #StarWarsTheRiseofSkywalker  still sitting at #1 as it kicks off its 3rd wknd. May reach about $37M for wknd #boxoffice pushing 17-day total to $454M on its way past $500M mark.

One thing I will give Kathleen Kennedy credit for is that all of her Disney Star Wars stuff looks great. Just tremendous visuals. The writing, directing, and sometimes acting might blow, but it will blow while looking amazing.

With the holidays over, I know we'll see a big dip in weekday sales. I'm thinking 30-35 mil for Mon-Sun. I don't see this reaching more than 530 mil domestically at this point. It might touch 1.2 bill globally, but 1.1 looks more likely. We'll see.

Right now I would put it to finish at 1.07b. I hope I’m wrong.

For a mainline Star Wars movie the box office is a major disappointment.

The first ever trilogy finale to make the least money. It's going to make significantly less than 8 which made significantly less than 7. Even the spinoff Rogue One will make more. A testament to how quickly the enthusiasm drained for Disney Star Wars movies compared to where it was at the beginning.

And despite Disney's desperate attempts to appeal to them, it's clear the international market does not give a crap about Star Wars.

Star Wars as a franchise is limping across the finish line at this point. It's still a hugely profitable IP but the lost opportunity cost is huge. They're making billions less than they thought they would on missed box office and merchandising. SW toys barely sell. That's where they are really kicking themselves.

I think they didn't give themselves a proper chance. You can't project what you think other people should like and expect to succeed. You actually have to have real empathy for other people's perspectives to make a product they will love in at least one dimension. I think they thought the high production value would be enough but it isn't special anymore. Back in the 70s and 80s the franchise had both a well organized story and visuals that few other films really challenged. Now, the visual appeal is there but its not special. And the characters and plots are pretty much flat and nonsensical.

The middle aged nerds that made that market a multi-billion dollar market are the ones that RJ and KK kicked repeatedly in the balls. You can't be surprised when you intentionally kill the nostalgia associated with the first trilogy and then the people who propped up that market become disengaged from the franchise merchandise.

How is that working out?

nerds? everyone liked Star Wars.

What they did was pissed off a enormous amount of older fans, many who have children, and in doing so, those parents don't get into these movies so their children don't get into them, and hence, lackluster merchandise sales.

Not particularly well.

I'd hedged by predicting a lower 1.15 to 1.35 range, but I've lost some confidence it hits the 1.15 after last weekend.

Glad to see it disappointing at the box office. Kathleen Kennedy destroyed whatever Star Wars was.
