Don’t watch much Star Trek, do you.

We're struggling for talent on this show. That weird old lady that talked funny was better looking than half of them. Not sure how I feel about that

Yea, that was pretty bad.

I agree. That was pretty rough.

About the politics . . .

All women and minorities (save for the overly-emotional Spock) were the stars. The ONLY guy they put on the bridge (some nobody) was put there so that Uhura could belittle him - and have the other female crew members shake their heads in agreement. And, if you noticed, that kid’s parents were both female.

It was so obviously over-the-top and purposeful. It’s like they didn’t care about how stupid the plot was, they just wanted to have an episode like this.

Extremely disappointing first episode after last season, where diversity was done in a Star Trek way - organically. This was just ideological (in an obvious way) bullshite.

If this is the new direction of this show, I may be done.

Well, that may be the problem. I have watched lots of Star Trek, so when they have another "steal the Enterprise" story, it is that much more glaring how lazy and unoriginal the writing is.

We finally have an explanation for Latka and Simpka Gravas.

They were aliens hiding on earth.

It was an odd 1st episode but let’s see where it goes next.

This is where I'm landing. I think it was good to have all of the support players to get some quality screen time. I really like La'an.

The Spock/Chapel situation is off. The chemistry is great just not consistent with what we know.

I wonder if the retcon of the purple Klingons is going to be addressed?

Well, shite. Seems like this show can’t win. It’s either not Star Trek enough for you or it’s too Star Trek.

Odd first episode. Very little Pike, and of course Carol Kane has to have an odd accent.

Wow, this thread is enough to keep me away from S2 of SNW.

Don’t. When Pike returns to the chair, things will seem more balanced. That is due to happen in about, oh… three days.

Btw… I think La’an is the breakout character so far in this show, aside from the canon characters. I want to know just how Noonien-Singh that character is.

I think the actors playing Spock and Pike are right on. Both are very likable in these roles. That plays a big part in the show’s success.

Seriously. The oddity of this episode was that it was the first of the season but, in this era of binge watching, most audiences won't notice it as more than a blip. Spock could always carry an episode on his own. Shatner just wouldn't have stood for it.

This is why you're one of my favorite Trek posters. You have an understanding of the series behind the scenes as well has the history dating back to TOS. "Almost" as good as mine.. Ha Ha.

The Galileo Seven Episode is probably the best example of Nimoy's acting range. Shatner is definitely a diva.

I don’t know that “most” folks binge watch, though a significant number do I’m sure so maybe as you say it will be a blip.

I primarily didn’t like the episode because of the ridiculous “action hero” versions of M’Benga and Chappell. It was simply lazy writing for them to use a drug that turns them into fighters instead of using their wits to escape.

I’m a little worried with the Spock-Chappell ‘shipping plus the whole trying to shoehorn Spock’s TOS-movie character arc into this show by, as someone else mentioned “giving him the feels”. Remember Spock in Amok time smiling and saying “Jim!”

Season 1 of Strange New Worlds was great. Season 2 is off to a bad start. I hope it gets better.

I’ll also add that in 1968, having a bridge with alien, a black woman, a Russian and a Asian was pretty radical for the time…maybe even more so than having a Hispanic lesbian at the helm today. Diversity for diversity sake has always been part of Star Trek…but to kinda make the point that we get past the need for that.

I also hated the doctor and nurse on PCP fight montage. It seemed like a weak version of the Daredevil extended fight sequences.

By the way, Anson Mount took a leave because he had a baby. They decided to lead with Spock and crew to give Mount a break to be with his wife and kid.

Why Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Changing How It Does Things for Season 2

As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off its second season, expect a bit of a changeup in its episodic structure and how Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) does his captaining on the USS Enterprise. By that we mean, he’s pretty scarce in the first three episodes.

TOS was three 26 episode seasons of “episodic” television. Not every story was good, but the majority were with several touching on greatness. The characters were developed within the stories. It was that way because of talented and creative writers.

SNW has ten episodes a season, roughly a third. Unlike TOS, a great deal of time is spent on plot lines that carry over.

Hey, here’s this planet that’s shared 50-50 by two formerly warring factions had the chance to be a great episode. But they didn’t take time to develop it.

Most of us couldn’t stomach Discovery but loved SNW

Discovery had a good idea that just petered out fast. Too much emphasis on a single character for what is supposed to be an ensemble show.

Season 2 is decent because we get introduced to Pike. It’s the only season where missing it MIGHT leave you a tiny bit confused in SNW but you can probably find YouTube vids that fill in those gaps.

As forgettable as S1 of Discovery ended up being (and squandering good ideas) and S2 being a Pike introduction, every season after that is just SO much worse.

SNW is worth the watch and S3 of Picard should be seen. Thankfully the only thing that might be missing is having a little bit more insight into Raffi’s character but you they give you enough info early into S3 that you won’t be confused by her motivations or anything.

To be fair he was more emotional in the pilot episode, when they had not written that into his character yet. This could be a lead up to those events and him becoming more detached for Kirk’s tenure.
