He was presumably running towards the outpost while running, the same destination as Spock.
The only real coincidence is the fact that they
happened to be near each other's path.

195 to 9 on rotten tomatoes, so the masses seem to be enjoying it.

And hell, reviewers aren't just the masses, reviewers as a national group are the thoughtful informed masses.
For a Sci-Fi movie to get 96% positive rating nationwide from reviewers is unprecedented.

Kirk getting on the same planet as Spock and then meeting was NOT a coincidence.
When Kirk showed up, wasn't Spock like "how did you find me?"

Also, if all it takes is a drop of "red matter" to create a black hole powerful enough to stop a supernova, why is Spock rolling around space with ~250 gallons of it in his little ship?

The movie isn't from Spocks perspective, is it?
Part of pet peev of mine how coincidence is used as a synoym for chance.
While the reasons for being sent there were different, the reason why that planet was where they were sent are very much connected.

SPOILERS
THought it was dumb that there were NO SHIPS ON EARTH capable of putting a stop to that drill and spock had to fly down in his little 'general greivous' motorcycle ship to shoot at it.
I mean really? A big arse tube from space is burning a hole into the Earth and we can't even scramble a couple of nearby F16s with a few sidewinders?

And if a drop can destroy a planet, why are you wasting time firing torps and phasers and not getting the frick out?
Warp cores ain't cheap Scotty!

no kidding..did spock & the romulan ship REALLY get far enough away to unleash the entire payload of that big red lava lamp stuff without creating a black hole that sucks in nearby galaxies?

Not much use for atmospheric military aircraft. And while it wasn't dwelled on, there was a defensive system to prevent atmospheric entry (I think) Nero bypassed.
Pretty much the only thing you need to defend yourself from is starships and all of the friendly ones around Earth were wiped out a couple of hours prior over Vulcan

Wow you have really got this thing figured out. Are you like knee deep in the mythology or something?
I'm a star wars fan, but i can accept that there are a bunch of crap parts to it.
It was a good movie, certainly entertaining, but it's still susceptible to nitpicking. It's a big planet, he finds spock in 30 minutes. Not really chance, just creative license by the writers.

No I just don't watch the movies assuming that if they don't give an explaination, there really isn't one. Makes the experience more enjoyable for me.
But knowing the deal about Spock and Kirk not being a coincidence has less to do with knowing any mythology and knowing more about meanings of words.
On a side note, I am about to catch my second viewing and there are maybe 50 people here at the Rave on a Friday

And another knock, Tyler Perry? Really?
I laughed when I saw that Madea was running Starfleet.

Yea, I agree totally. I loved how they dumped their payload on the romulan ship and then sat their and watched it for a few sec before they had the "oh shite" moment and decided they might ought to get away from the black hole (but by then it was too late, of course)... I laughed out loud.
If they *really* had to shoot at the ship getting devoured by a black hole, they have aft torpedo's.
And the warp cores... would that have even worked? They were close enough to the black hole that they couldn't escape its gravitational pull at warp whatever, so...
1) Wouldn't an explosion powerful enough to overcome the black hole's gravitational pull also blow the enterprise to pieces?
2) When they ejected the warp cores, shouldn't they have dropped out of warp? When that happens they would be traveling at warp speed into the black hole and this maneuver would not have had time to work.
3) Also about the ejected warp cores, after they eject... the gravitational force pulling on the enterprise from the black hole is ~400,000 times greater than the same force that's pulling on the warp core, due to the difference in mass. It doesn't seem like you could just "shoot" a warpcore into the black hole when you're that close. So, you'd be detonating warp cores right outside of the hull, which would probably destroy the enterprise.

I had very similar thoughts about the warp core idea. Its just a standard Trek way of doing things
"Oh frick, we can't get out of wherever we are, let's just eject the warp core that'll probably do it"
If going multiple times the speed of light can't get you out, why is this explosion going to propel you to new speeds never obtainable?

Finally saw it this afternoon, I thought the story was so-so, but the casting and music were terrific.
Overall good and surprisingly funny.

Saw my son's name in the credits so I'm happy.

The music was good, but it wasn't "Star Trek music" if that makes sense... it didn't sound like a Trek movie to me. Those of you who are oldschool fans should get what I'm saying
