Speak No Evil (2022) l Horror film on Shudder (Some spoilers)

Finally got around to watching this last night. I rarely get the opportunity to get 90 minutes of uninterrupted time (and I didn't actually accomplish that. Took me about 2.5 hours to watch this last night, which did affect the impact on me).
Basic plot summary: Danish couple on vacation in Italy meets and befriends a Dutch couple. Some time later, the Dutch couple invites the Danish couple to stay at their home in the Dutch countryside. Hijinks ensue!
This is a really well made psychological thriller/horror movie with a real gut punch of an ending. However, the most uneasy I felt was definitely during the progresion of the plot (via character itneractions) more than the upsetting ending. I've seen the movie described as nihilistic and misanthropic and that's certainly how you feel immediately after the end, but if you think about the movie its actually very constructive and has a real point to it on the meta level (discussed below with plot spoilers).
It's a Danish movie but is almost all in English. Crisp 98 minutes, so it's not an investment (like a masterpiece like the Wailing). Plot moves along without much fluff. Definitely worth the investment.
Spoilers (on the theme more than plot)
I'm not usually a "horror movies are mirrors for social commentary" guy, but this movie was very effective in its meta point. We have become way too conditioned to avoid social awkwardness and allow proper boundaries and communication to dissolve. The movie works this point on multiple levels, from friend-friend to spouse-spouse to parent-child (The dad not being able to stand his daughter crying because she left a stuffed animal is what doomed them, ultimately. There was no reason for that)
End Spoilers

regarding your spoilers...
the commentary (to me) was less on social awkwardness and boundaries than it was that we will let somebody do harm because it might violate some forms of social norms.
i took it as way more political than social if that makes sense. i.e. we will allow our own demise at the cost of calling out obvious bad behavior.
***spoiler***
ending is brutal. "because you let me."

I put spoilers in the subject.
I think it's a tomato/tomato scenario. The social norms make violating them create awkwardness, so that we don't establish proper boundaries. I mean Bjorn wouldn't even tell his wife the danger they were facing to avoid her reaction, and he believed the bad guy when he told Bjorn nothing would happen if they did what they were told.
It also is touched on just before the scream session when Bjorn talks about how repressed his true self is because the person he's become is so bound by social expectations (including having "friends" he doesn't even like). The movie starts off on this note, too, when he says he doesn't want to sit by the couple who is doing the cooking courses and...he ends up next to the couple and just sucks it up.

I had heard this was in the works.
It looks like kind of a shot by shot remake essentially until the ending, which looks legit terrible (and spoils the shock of the climax)
Also, they Americanized one couple but kept the baddies European for...reasons.
Although McAvoy looks like he's cookin.

This one is on my list. It's funny because yesterday (I was off) I was kinda wanting to watch a good horror movie, but couldn't decide on anything so I ended up finally rewatching The Outsiders for the first time in forever.
Now that I have Shudder, I may have to check this one out soon.

If you had Shudder watch Speak no Evil and When Evil Lurks.
I have it for another month.
Kids vs. Aliens (2022) interests me. It's from the vignette from VHS2 (like Siren from VHS1). I'm going to try to watch that before my $0.99/month sub ends.
Not sure what other quality is on Shudder. I think it has Kill List again, which you should watch if you haven't.

There was a thread about this movie a year or two ago and the prevailing theme was it pissed everyone off about how beta people are. After watching it, you realize how scared the world is of it's own shadow.

Another remake we didn’t need.
Other than making the victim family American and the psycho family Scottish, it looks to be pretty much the same up until the ending. Apparently the American family fights back. I wonder if they will keep the same downbeat ending. Per usual, the trailer gives away the twist.

That was the point.
It's a film criticizing our extreme social politeness today. Being rude is scarier to them than putting your family in danger.

We've talked about that one before. It was meh.

May check that one out. I thought the Slumber Party Abduction vignette was pretty well done.

Yeah the movie is like a throwback to 80s/90s kid adventure movies around that setting, as best I can tell.

I wonder if they'll give it the super-mega-happy ending like "The Vanishing (1993)". It's pretty much the same setup.

Yeah it's so dumb.
They probably yell out what the theme of the movie is, too, at some point during this final conflict, instead of the subtle
****SPOILER****
because you let me

Yep. I’m not sure that would hold true with American audiences, so they had to at least have the American family try to fight back.
The Danish family in the original had multiple opportunities to escape, even after Bjorn figured out what Patrick and Karin were planning. The movie didn’t specify, but I assume that Patrick and Karin targeted families of different nationalities, otherwise the authorities would’ve known about dozens of families going missing. I liked how the Dutch family didn’t give a reason why they were doing it, other than because Bjorn and Louise let them.

I was expecting the guest couple to start building a computer at the Cabin.

Just finished this. brutal. A solid examination of social norms. I don’t think there’s any real intention to make some sort of political statement here.
I also agree with you in that I found the whole build up to the end to be by far the most uncomfortable. When they finally drop the facade it was almost a relief at that point.
